Panning allows photographers to mimic an object's movement in images.

Pan-Tilt Heads
The classic tripod head, the pan-tilt (three-way) head provides separate controls for panning left and right, tilting up and down, and rotating your camera for vertical compositions.

Pan Format
"Pan" format - one of the three selectable Advanced Photo System print formats; a 1:3 aspect ratio that produces prints of 3.5 x 10.5 inches or up to 4.5 x 11.5 inches; suitable for panoramic shots and tall or wide subjects.

Pan (Panchromatic) Designation of films that record all colors in tones of about the same relative brightness as the human eye sees in the original scene, sensitive to all visible wave-lengths.

Pan/Tilt/Zoom (PTZ) indicates equipment with the ability to pan, tilt and zoom, usually controlled by remote. Much of PTZ equipment is completely integrated, meaning there is only one controller necessary to operate all three features.

Pan - Moving the camera horizontally to capture a subject in motion.
Panorama - A series of images stitched together to create a picture wider than what the camera is normally capable of capturing.

pan

Pan-Focus
Special programm mode in which the autofocus can be turned off and the camera will adjust the focal point and the diaphragm so that everything in a certain distance area will be in focus.

Pan

Pan Head - Movie camera - Pan heads are slower to adjust because you usually have 3 knobs to move. They can be an advantage if you do a lot of 'action tracking' shots because they pan smoothly.

Pan and tilt levers and ball releases should lock firmly or unlock the tripod head for smooth easy movement with just 1/2 to 3/4 turn of the lever or knob. A good ball head will have an adjustment for the friction of the ball when the release is open.

3-Way Pan/Tilt Heads
The classic tripod head is called a 3-way pan/tilt head. You can rotate (pan) it, tip it forward and back, and tilt it side to side.

The way they pan the camera and follow the subject like in the race car photo is something that I was trying to do in my project with a falling golfball. It keeps the subject in focus and the background blurred.

By contrast, if you pan your camera quickly or shake it unnecessarily while pressing the shutter, your camera is really moving at a very high rate of speed, relatively speaking.

When you must pan the camera, keep your elbow free and pivot your body at the waist.

The unique diagonal bracing of the ball clamping mechanism completely prevents it from being tilted to the other side, forcing you to pan the head around to get the same range of motion a more traditional ballhead affords.

For all of my images I shoot using Ilford Pan FPlus, which has a film speed of 50. I develop the film in my studio using Ilford ID-11 powder developer and standard photographic chemicals.

A simple method is to place a pan of water on a hot radiator. The heat evaporates the water, thus adding moisture to the air. A more effective method is to use a humidifier.

Heads tend to come in two categories - the pan and tilt heads and the ball and socket heads. Both have advantages and disadvantages. The pan and tilt heads move up and down, left to right.

Pan and tilt heads offer great control in composing your picture but they are slow to operate since you have to work with three different controls. Ball heads have only one control. When you loosen the control all movements are free.

I mount my bracket on a Manfrotto tripod, which has a center post that rotates, thus there is no need for a ball or pan head. I level the tripod using the leg adjustments, with an inexpensive bubble level on the center post.

On an SLR camera, you can pan the camera to blur the background. Hold the shutter button down half way and follow your subject before actually taking the shot.

Use the quick control dial to pan around the image, press the direction switch button to change from horizontal to vertical panning. Note that it is possible to change image while maintaining magnification, just roll the main dial.

A slow shutter speed can also help give a sense of motion by allowing a photographer to pan on a moving subject and purposely blur the background.

Another approach is to slow things down with a shutter in the 1/15 sec range and pan as the child goes down the slide (shooting from the side). A sense of movement results with (hopefully) a reasonably crisp and suitably excited expression.

Optical / Digital Zoom Zoom lenses allow you to close in to your subject or pan right out again without you actually having to move and are constructed to allow a continuously variable focal length, without disturbing focus.

Then pan with your subject to try and get the main subject as sharp as possible (but not necessarily too sharp) and the background will appear as streaks of light. The funfair is a great place for this type of photo with the bright coloured lights.

Virtual Reality Movie - This is a type of movie that lets you interact with it by allowing you to tilt, pan or otherwise move through a virtual space.

If you want your object blurry - hold the camera steady.
If you want the background blurry - move the camera (pan) along with your object.

To date, Pan African Latin has only 33% glyph coverage. Since the design is aimed at display on-screen at small sizes, the printed output (especially of the bold and oblique) may not work well. License: free for personal and commercial work.

In shallow water you may get double imaging of a fast moving subject with a Nikonos if you don't pan the camera because of the slow shutter speed required for flash synchronisation.
