Panchromatic means sensitive to all colours of light. Early orthochromatic film had very little sensitivity to red light, leaving red subjects as black in the resulting images.

Panchromatic
Term used to describe 'Black & White' emulsions that are sensitive to all visible colours. Most modern films are panchromatic.

Panchromatic Films
Films which must be handled to total darkness until completely processed. Example: Kodak T-Max, Tri-x, Plus-X, Ilford Delta, Agfa APX.
PANCHROMATIC or "Pan" - Photographic film sensitive to all visible colors. Pan films record all colors in tones of roughly similarly relative brightness as seen by the eye in the original scene.

Conversion of the industry from orthochromatic to panchromatic stocks was initiated by Kodak over the course of the decade.

T-Max films have a different spectral sensitivity than most other panchromatic films. They "see" colors in a way that is closer to human eyesight. There may be some differences in filter factors with T-MAX films.
Black and white is sensitive to most of the visible spectrum of light (panchromatic), along with some ultraviolet. It is more sensitive to blues, which means skies tend to get overexposed.

First a tone mask is made by exposing panchromatic black- and- white film to a color image through a color filter. The film is solarized.
