A specialist camera designed that produces an elongated image by exposing using more than one film frame. A 35mm version will use one and a half frames to create a 24x54mm image and a 120 film type can capture 6x17cm images.

What's the best technique to obtain a panoramic image without going in for expensive equipment such as panoramic cameras? I have a Canon EOS 30D and shoot with a Gitzo tripod and Kirk BH-1 ballhead.
There are some cameras (mostly panoramic cameras with swing lenses) that use the same “trick' as focal plane shutters, but for all exposure times. A rotating barrel with a narrow slit is exposing the frame from one side to the other.
Until the advent of digital cameras and editing software, doing this meant using either a low-quality disposable panoramic camera or plowing the kids' college fund into a professional camera dedicated to this use.
