Pantone
Pantone sells the new $89 "huey" (sic) monitor calibration system. The system is made by GretagMacbeth. It is similar to the Colorvision calibrator I use and ads the nifty feature of adjusting the calibration to changing ambient light.

PANTONE ColoursA colour system of over 1200 standard colours developed by Pantone, Inc. The PMS Pantone Matching System is a swatch book that describes colours by assigning them numbers.

For example, scan a swatch of Pantone Reflex Blue, which we know from Pantone is R=0, G=32, B=159. Scanner A may read the swatch as R=2, G=32 and B=159, and Scanner B may read it as R=0, G=33, B=158, and so forth.

Update 6/11/2005 - With new inexpensive options such as the Pantone Huey ($89 list price) there's really no excuse not to profile your monitor. At least I can't think of any....

Separate colours can be added on a separate plate to create special effects such as gold ink or a varnished area that can not be made up from CMYK in the standard Pantone range. These are called spot colours.
