The most familiar example is the print made on a paper base. A photographic print is made by passing light through the negative onto a piece of paper coated with a light-sensitive emulsion, very similar to film.

The coating is an ink receiving layer on top of a paper layer, and prints dry quickly as ink is absorbed into the paper base. These papers fade in bright light and feel light weight.

The paper base is not affected so whites stay white. Common toning colours are sepia and blue. This can be achieved digitally using most software's hue/saturation settings or Photoshop's duotones system.

Ivorytype
An obsolete printing process designed to give the impression of a painting on ivory. A hand coloured print was impregnated with wax and squeegeed face down on hot glass. The paper base was then back by ivory tinted paper.

Not all, but many fiber papers available today are near or full exhibition grade. This generally means they have a thicker emulsion, and a heavier paper base.

The gelatin had previously been made light-sensitive by a bath of potassium bichromate. After washing, the image on the tissue was transferred to a paper base and the backing of the tissue was stripped off.
