PC Cards - This small card is compatible with PCs or laptops and enables the user to insert storage cards from digital cameras for easy transfer and sharing of information.

 


PC card. A card, in the case of cameras usually a storage device, that plugs into a slot in a notebook or hand-held computer. Originally called PCMCIA cards.

PC Card - Refers to a credit card-sized device which can be a flash memory card, a network card, a modem or even a hard drive. Comes in two flavors: Type I/II which is a single slot height and Type III which requires a double-height card slot.

PC Card ( PCMCIA Card)
PC cards are about the size of a credit card and were developed to be a standard for hardware capability expanding devices. PCMCIA cards provide an easy way to transfer photos from the camera to a notebook or desktop PC.

ATA- This means the camera supports the electrical interface standard, defined by the PC Card Association (formerly PCMCIA), known as ATA (AT Attachment). This is the mobile computing equivalent of the IDE standard for desktop computers.

One thing to be aware of is that newer computers and card readers have a ExpressCard slot instead of the older CardBus PC card slot.

Card Reader: Those cheap PC card adapters are fine for small cards or low volume shooting, but if you're shooting a lot of high-resolution images you'll want to invest in a 32-bit adapter like the one from Delkin or a Firewire or USB2.

Most digital cameras with PC Card interfaces use a storage technology called CompactFlash. Standard supported by the CompactFlash Association.

PCMCIA cards are about the size of a credit card and these PC Cards have been developed to be a standard for hardware capability expanding devices.

The interface to both is based on the PC Card (PCMCIA) standard and both have the same form factor so that either can be used in most digital cameras (those that use Sony memory sticks and other less common media being the exception).

CompactFlash memory - Based on Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) PC card specifications, CompactFlash measures 43 x 36 mm and is available with storage capacities up to 1GB.

Expandable media solution with PC Card adapters and USB card readers, allowing easy interfacing with personal computers. A CompactFlash adapter is available that allows use of xD-Picture Cards in cameras designed for CompactFlash media.

Slot
Expansion interface in computers, notebooks and other devices. Expansion cards, e.g. PC Cards, can be plugged or built in here to increase performance, capacity or the capabilities of the device.

Card adapter
Device in which the memory card can be inserted for transferring the data on a memory card between a PC Card slot and disk drive to the computer.
