Pinhole Photography in Science
In the late Middle Ages the pinhole was used to study the projection of light through a small aperture. In the 16th century and later it was used in astronomy to study solar eclipses.

A Pinhole Camera is a lens-less camera that only allows a small amount of light to pass through a hole that opens at 0.5mm or less.
What is Pinhole Photography?
Pinhole photography is fairly simple to explain. It is like any other kind of photography, but instead of using a lens, a very small hole used to project the image on the film or other light sensitive material.

Pinhole Photography involves making a pinhole in the end of a box, tube, or any other object that can be made light proof and then placing film or paper in the other end to expose by the light entering.

A variant of pinhole photography is zone plate photography. Light bends, or is diffracted, when it travels past an edge and the zone plate takes advantage of this principle.

To achieve this pinholes are implemented in optically conjugated locations in the optical path. They function as point light source (excitation pinhole) and point detector (detection pinhole).
The simplest kind of lens is a pinhole in a piece of thin metal or black paper. Of course, only an extremely small part of the light reflected by a subject passes through the pinhole and enters the camera.

These early cameras did not fix an image, but only projected images from an opening in the wall of a darkened room onto a surface, turning the room into a large pinhole camera. The phrase camera obscura literally means darkened room.

One of the first things I did was to take the lens off, tape tinfoil over the opening, and put a pinhole in the foil. So there I was with the most advanced digital camera of its day using the most primitive “lens' in the world.

You'll pretty much have to guess what looks right and what does not; wide-open, the aperture should not obscure the rear elements too much (if at all), and stopped down, it should not be a tiny pinhole.
