A polariser is an essential addition to any photographer's kit bag. The filter may look like a simple piece of grey glass, but its effect can be far more impressive, adding extra punch and colour saturation to your images.
Polariser - A photographic filter for eliminating glare and reflections. Just like your polarised sunglasses get rid of annoying glare, the polariser filter does the same for your digital camera. However - there are 2 types, linear and circular.
Polarisers don't uniformly increase contrast in an image; they darken only polarised light. This includes light from a clear sky that's at 90 degrees from the sun; reflections off water, glass and most other NON-metallic surfaces.
However, I think it is essential to have at least a set of neutral density grey graduates, a polariser and an overall neutral density filter. The majority of my landscape work is shot in low light where the land and sky exposures differ greatly.
Get right angles to the sun and turn your polariser and watch then change from a silvery green to a deep lush, almost edible, green. In general, the polariser will increase the colour saturation of your photos.
I am wishing to purchase a circular Singh-Ray plain glass polariser filter. I hear it is an excellent filter.
I find polarising filters a BIG help in indirect sunlight situations. If having light data loss happens when trying to expose correctly for a shaded area, polarisers often help quote a lot in at least allowing easier even light in post-production.
The limitation of this format is that it will be difficult to use it with a polariser and neutral density graduates. The next option is the 6x8cm but it is not good enough for stock photography. The only model available for this is the Fuji GX680.
31-05-2011 Can I just point out that reflections on metals (and in mirrors) do not polarise light, and so those reflections are not removed by the use of a polariser.
If I use the polarizer on the LF camera, I just put a polariser on my 35mm lens. The 24-120 or 24-85 lenses matches all the 4 focals that I commonly use on the LF camera. Better focussing screen ...
