Posterization: Cause
The cause of posterization can be explained in one little sentence: too little information spread too far apart.

Posterization or Banding
Smooth tonal gradations in the sky.
This exaggerated example shows "posterization" or "banding" due to a lack of tones. The histogram is combed with wide gaps between adjacent tones.

Posterization occurs when an image's apparent bit depth has been decreased so much that it has a visual impact.

Posterization
Posterization is the process of changing the tonal gradations in certain areas of an image.

POSTERIZATION - occurs when a gradual or smooth tonal transition in an image appears or is made to appear as an abrupt change from one tone to another.

Posterization:
The visible banding effect when a photographic image is displayed due to the lack of colors or shades of gray in a picture.

Posterization: A special effects printing technique that separates normal tones into distinct tone ranges by the use of high contrast films. A specialized darkroom technique.

Posterization
A photographic or digital graphic effect arising from reducing the number of continuous tones in an image. Can be a deliberate effect or a result of over-manipulation or compression in a digital image.

posterization:
The effect produced when a photographic image is displayed or printed with a small number of colors or shades of gray.

posterization
(1) a special effect performed on a piece of art that compresses all of the tonal values into a smaller range of tones usually not more than four; (2) a special effect created by using a limited number of gray levels within an image, ...

Posterization - photographic technique using a number of tone separated negatives which are printed on high contrast material. A master negative is made by printing these in register.

(Posterization). Process of reducing the tonal range of a photograph to a very restricted range. The final result has strong highlights and deep shadows with a certain number of intermediate tones.

Color Posterization. -
Tone separation masks are used in non- technical photography to make color posterizations.75,79 Posterization is the technique of separating the tonal gradations of a photograph into clearly defined steps.

Long-exposure noise reduction system produces some artifacts, some black specs where noisy pixels had become saturated, and minor posterization or banding in areas or subtle tonal gradation ...

Textile detail can be used to test for posterization and detail capabilites on screen and in print. This image was shot in full sun at high altitude which further enhances color detail and saturation.

As desired. Do not over-saturate. Avoid posterization.
Use Selective Color, Hue/Saturation adjustment layers in various blending modes. Use masks when needed.

impression of continuous tone we need to reproduce 256 differentiations of tone from white to black. If we break down the tonal range into fewer differentiations you begin to see the breaks between the individual tones. We call this posterization, ...

Working in 16 bit mode gives you more freedom to adjust tones and colors without introducing two digital workflow nasties, posterization and banding.

You shouldn't need to add a layer if you can work in 16 bit mode because there should be no banding or posterization in 16 bit mode and no need for the selective (in layer) application of the noise filter.

You can do this to some extent with an 8-bit per channel file, but do it too much and you get posterization effects. Our Canon D60 and D30 can record 12-bits per channel of information, but it gets clipped to 8-bits if we use jpeg files.
