Posterization: Cause
The cause of posterization can be explained in one little sentence: too little information spread too far apart.

Posterization
A photographic technique using a number of tone separated negatives which are printed on high contrast material. A master negative is made by printing these in register.

random()*10000000000000000; only a limited number of tones may be available to describe a certain area of the image, as shown in this exaggerated example. This causes visible "banding" or "posterization".

Posterization
Posterization is the process of changing the tonal gradations in certain areas of an image.

Posterization - Process that reduces the number of tones in an image making it look flat.
PPI - The amount of Pixels per Inch in an image.
Pre-Focus - Essentially this is auto focusing achieved by holding the shutter button half way down.

Posterization A graphic effect in which an area of an image with a smooth transition of tones is replaced with several areas of fewer tones. PPI Pixels per inch.

POSTERIZATION - occurs when a gradual or smooth tonal transition in an image appears or is made to appear as an abrupt change from one tone to another.

Posterization: A special effects printing technique that separates normal tones into distinct tone ranges by the use of high contrast films. A specialized darkroom technique.

Posterization - A banding effect produced by reducing the number of gray tones in an image.

posterization:
The effect produced when a photographic image is displayed or printed with a small number of colors or shades of gray.

posterization
(1) a special effect performed on a piece of art that compresses all of the tonal values into a smaller range of tones usually not more than four; (2) a special effect created by using a limited number of gray levels within an image, ...

Posterization
A visual defect (also called banding) in an image created by insufficient amounts of data to maintain the appearance of continuous tone.

Posterization
A photographic or digital graphic effect arising from reducing the number of continuous tones in an image. Can be a deliberate effect or a result of over-manipulation or compression in a digital image.

Color Posterization. -
Tone separation masks are used in non- technical photography to make color posterizations.75,79 Posterization is the technique of separating the tonal gradations of a photograph into clearly defined steps.

If posterization still persists, you may need to incorporate an additional intermediary exposure. While blending the two images, apply the same principles and be mindful of the same concerns during acquisition.

Stylize pictures with effects like posterization, bas-relief, motion, or even transform color pictures to black and white. The Stylize icon allows combining two pictures into one or adding captions in a slide show format.

What RAW does allow is expansion of part of the captured dynamic range without posterization, thus allowing detail to be brought out of shadow and highlight that would be cut off if the data was limited to fewer bits.

As desired. Do not over-saturate. Avoid posterization.
Use Selective Color, Hue/Saturation adjustment layers in various blending modes. Use masks when needed.

The added color information of RAW files helps to avoid posterization or banding, such as found in 8-bit JPEG files. This banding occurs when there aren't enough tonal values to display continuous tonality.

impression of continuous tone we need to reproduce 256 differentiations of tone from white to black. If we break down the tonal range into fewer differentiations you begin to see the breaks between the individual tones. We call this posterization, ...

16-bit reduces the appearance of posterization, making the transitions between colors smoother.
Resolution - Usually the default settings here are good enough.
Compression - This option appear when TIFF is set for file format.

-Tone separation - process of reducing the tonal range of a photograph to a very restricted range. The final result has strong highlights and deep shadows with a set number of intermediate tones. Also refereed to as Posterization.

Working in 16 bit mode gives you more freedom to adjust tones and colors without introducing two digital workflow nasties, posterization and banding.

You shouldn't need to add a layer if you can work in 16 bit mode because there should be no banding or posterization in 16 bit mode and no need for the selective (in layer) application of the noise filter.

will allow you to make contrast adjustments to the entire image. You can alternatively make adjustments to different colours by changing the channel option, however, ensure you only make subtle alterations when using this to avoid a posterization ...

If you use the colorimetric rendering intent when converting to a smaller color space you may see banding, posterization and other artifacts into the image.
Saturation is designed to produce saturated colors without trying to be accurate.
