GLOSSARY: Prime Lens
These are the opposite of zoom lenses in that they are fixed at one focal length (often called a fixed focal length lens.we're an inventive bunch aren't we!?).
Although they will work with some zoom lenses, they're best used with (fast) prime lenses, since there usually is a drop in quality, and many prime lenses give a higher level of quality to start with.

Many photographers keep their lens kit to the three zoom lenses discussed previously. These lenses would probably cover 80-90% of the photos for any given wedding. It is worth including 2-3 fast prime lenses in your bag as well.

Prime Lens - This is a lens with only one fixed focal length.

As with most photographers, I so want zoom lenses to work. Why have three lenses when only one will do the job.
PRIME LENS - A fixed focal length (FFL) lens, as opposed to a zoom lens, which has a variable focal length (VFL). A prime lens generally has better optical quality and a larger maximum aperture.

A lens that has one focal length. For example 135 mm lens is a prime lens.

The opposite of a zoom lens, prime lenses have one fixed focal length. They represent the best quality of lens available, but have the big drawback in that they cannot 'zoom in' to a subject.
Cheap prime lens.
If your primary objective is to learn more about basic photography skills and take photos of reasonable quality then your first lens should probably be a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens. This is a very fast fixed focal length lens.

Prime lenses take sharper photographs than their zoom counterparts, because from a design point of view they have fewer compromises.

Prime lens:
It is well known that prime lenses take sharper photographs. However, I would only recommend you use a prime lens if you have already done aerial photography and want to challenge your skills.
Prime lenses have fixed focal lengths. While it may seem they are less versatile than zooms, they are often of superior optical quality, faster, lighter in weight, smaller in size and generally cheaper to buy.
Prime lenses always have a faster wide open lens speed then an equivalent zoom. Prime lenses usually produce very good image quality wide open and are excellent one stop down from their widest aperture.

A prime lens has fixed focal length, which means you cannot zoom the motive closer or more distant. Instead you - the photographer, have to move closer to or more distant from the motive to get the framing you want.
On a prime lens, you shouldn't notice any loss of IQ with a 1.4x teleconverter. You might notice a small loss of IQ with a 2x teleconverter.

Many prime lenses have Depth of Field scale markings. These enable an estimate of DOF to be made based on focusing distance and aperture. Below is an example. This is a 17mm lens with a DOF scale designed for use on a full frame 35mm film camera.

So, putting a 6T on top of a 300mm lens will give you just shy of life size (300 divided by 345). This same 6T stacked on a 50mm lens would only net you around one seventh life size.
What's a prime lens? It's any lens that has a fixed focal length — like a 28mm or a 105mm or a 300mm. In it's simplest form, it's any lens that's not a zoom. What's the big advantage of a prime lens?

The term prime refers to a lens with a single focal length.
As a long time prime lens user, I have been using lens pairs for many years, and often will add a single lens to the pair depending on what or where I will be shooting.
Prime Lens: A fixed lens, 80mm, 105mm, or 200mm lens for example, are considered prime lenses. Primes are often considered faster than zoom lenses because there are fewer elements inside thus a wider aperture is possible.
This glass will match the optical quality of the prime lens (even at the edges, unlike many teleconverters on the market today). The optical design of the elements and light path is wide enough not to cause any vignetting.

Optically the prime lenses such as the Nikonos 15 mm and Sea & Sea 15 mm are. superior, but the quality of the supplementary lenses such as the Sea & Sea SWL16 and Subawider are very good at a fraction of the price.
A fixed focal-length lens is also called a "prime lens." Fixed focal-length lenses are markedly sharper than zoom lens, because they employ a lower number of lens elements so therefore the machining of the glass can be that much more precise.

I'm thinking I should get a full frame camera, like the D700, but what is the best lens(s)? Do I get a prime lens? Right now I have 5 Fuji S5's, 2 S3's, 2 D200's and a couple of Canons.
Then for low-light photography I purchased a couple of wide-aperture prime lenses:

Close-up lens. A lens add-on, resembling a filter, that allows you to take pictures at a distance that is less than the closest-focusing distance of the prime lens alone.
I also carry lots of prime lenses: A 35mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.2, a 24mm f/1.4, and a 85mm f/1.2-all for different situations. I shoot a lot with the 35mm and 50mm. Those are great for details and bridal portraits.
A short focal length, such as 28mm, will have a wider angle of view compared to the tight or telephoto focal length of a large 300mm lens. Zoom lenses have the ability to move through a range of focal lengths, while prime lenses are fixed at a ...
This can come as high as 48X and higher. While this may come in handy in some situations it does not offer the quality of a true optical zoom lens. Pay more attention to the optical (prime lens) zoom ratio than the digital zoom capability.
A great eye beats hardware any day. As for me, I shoot with a Canon 7D and a 24 mm prime lens. This lets me get right up close and personal with my subject. I feel like I'm part of the action, not some distant observer.
For users of small cameras, this is easy and a big advantage to the camera. For users of dSLRs, this is where having a small prime lens (I use a 50mm 1.4 f lens) is a great tool. These lenses are small and non-intimidating.
The best work is the one that can produce an enlarged image of the size 11x14 inches. If the image is any smaller than this then the subject's face will look too small. You will require the help of a low ISO setting, prime lenses, a tripod, ...
