For printing, the general rule is that you want 150 to 200 pixels per inch of print size. On this page, Kodak recommends the following as minimum resolutions for these different print sizes.

Bidirectional Printing: A typewriter always prints from left to right. So did the early computer printers. That's unidirectional printing. The newer computer printers will print from left to right, drop down a line, then print from right to left.

As such, the use of baryta in papers for photographic printing has a long history of archival permanence. Inkjet-compatible baryta papers use a multi-layer coating that includes baryta over a base such as cotton rag or alpha cellulose.

Do not fold or roll the paper, or scratch the printing side.
Do not touch the printable side without cotton gloves or you can transfer moisture or oil to it.
Store and use paper and prints at normal room temperatures and humidities.

For regularly printing large quantities of images a color laser printer would be a better choice. They are quieter in operation and generally produce higher quality images.

Printing your photos can be very expensive. You can save money by using an online printing service, especially if they are having a sale. You can also print them yourself if you have a printer.

Every printing system is going to look different from what you see on the screen. This is the nature of the beast. To eliminate these differences, you must modify the image before printing so that the print matches the screen.

After printing the patches and letting the paper dry, you then use a spectrophotometer to measure the color patches.

Is date printing turned off? If the date back LCD display shows "----" then no date information will be printed. Try pushing the MODE button on the camera back, if it has one, until it displays the date.

Photos for printing need to have a much higher resolution. 300 pixels per inch is considered the minimum for printing in a magazine and seems to be a good optimum for printing on a color inkjet printer.

If you are printing your own pictures then you get a second chance to get the cropping right but, don't rely on this to make up for sloppy camera technique.

Bleed - Printing term referring to an image or linked area that extends to the edge of the printed piece.

Inkjet - A printing method where the printer sprays ionized ink at a sheet of paper. Magnetized plates in the ink's path direct the ink onto the paper in the desired shapes and patterns to make an image.

Black and white printing filters make it possible to increase or decrease the number of gray tones in a print. This is referred to as changing the contrast of the print. They are manufactured by Kodak and Ilford.

Megapixel and printing Remember, size is relative to resolution!
It might all be pixels but on screen it's 'pixels per inch', printed it is 'dots per inch'. Even on screen all things aren't equal, a Windows based PC is 96 dpi, an AppleMac 72 dpi.

Improvements to printing include built-in soft proofing: the ability to preview the appearance of a print with a chosen paper profile, and to preview out of gamut areas. These are accessed by checkboxes under the image preview in the print dialog box.

In conventional printing, halftones are created by photographing an image through a screen. The screen frequency, measured in lines per inch, determines how many dots are used to make each spot of gray.

Plate: An Offset Printing plate is a metal plate photo-etched from the halftone separation negatives.
Post-Production: A term taken from the motion picture industry which refers to all of the editing that takes place after the actual shooting of film.
