Figure 11-10 shows the difference in contrast obtained from one negative using different contrast printing filters.

Colour printing filters
Yellow, Magenta and Cyan filters used when making colour prints, in order render the colours correctly or as desired. They come in a range of density from 0.025 to 0.50.

Black and white printing filters make it possible to increase or decrease the number of gray tones in a print. This is referred to as changing the contrast of the print. They are manufactured by Kodak and Ilford.

color or variable contrast printing filters, 21/4-in. optical glass condenser, and a 14 1/4 x 11 3/4-in. white laminated baseboard for enlargements up to 8x10-in. The reversible column allows for floor projection and large magnifications.

This makes white clouds look awful. Forget the curves, just look at the pictures. You cannot tune this out with color printing filters or gels over the taking lens, although you can tweak it out in Photoshop if you are advanced.

Photographic color printing filters (available in cyan, yellow and magenta) can also be used, but these filters are usually too pale to give nice, rich colors in the final print.
