Prints arrived very quickly from California on Kodak DuraLife paper, complete with Ofoto and the processing date stamped on the back. Most likely, these are the same CRT printers that Kodak used, but I didn't verify this.

 


Blueprints on Fabric is basically a cyanotype without having to own an enlarger or darkroom chemicals. This process creates a bluescale (vs greyscale) contact print.

When making prints, a useful tool to have is a rotary paper trimmer that trims and scores paper. Trimming cuts paper to size and there are even special blades that add scalloped or deckled edges to the paper.

MAKING COLOR PRINTS The procedures for setting up the enlarger and composing and cropping the image in color printing are basically the same as black-and-white printing.

If the prints are left alone for only a few hours, it's probably fine, but for inkjet prints, I would not want to let them sit one on top of the other for extended periods.

Monotone prints are made by using varying levels of black. But modern inks, and papers, add subtle hues that question the relevance of the term 'black-and-white.

Home made prints should be stored in binders or boxes since they can be prone to fading if exposed to direct (sun)light. For framed prints protective UV sprays are available and most manufacturers now use archival inks that should last for many years.

Computer prints.
Dyes used by inkjet computer printers have similar problems with colour fading. Some early inkjets, in fact, were notorious for severe colour fading and colour shifting problems, particularly when exposed to ultraviolet light.

Pretty good prints can now be made using a basic computer, Photoshop, an Epson color printer and Epson Photo Paper. Epson prints are of a high enough quality that this option should be carefully considered as a possible alternative to a darkroom.

Unfortunately the machine printing methods used by most labs, particularly those dealing in high volume developing and printing, are rarely suited to the production of black and white prints so results can sometimes be a bit disappointing.

Do a test print before you order a large batch of color-corrected prints. Don’t worry about pestering the store employees - if the test photo doesn’t look right ask them to try different parameters.

Faster ISO Negative films, even ISO 400 and 800 have improved dramatically that it is now possible to make large prints that required slower films only a few years ago. The fastest slide film I use is Fujichrome Provia 100.

Less than 3 megapixel cameras are suitable for basic snapshots; the camera will be small and good enough to take basic 'I was there' shots, but the images won't be as clear if you want anything larger than standard 4x6 prints.

Because processed slide film doesn't result in actual prints, it is generally cheaper to develop slide film than standard print film.
