Quarter tones Tones between shadow and midtones are known as 3/4 tones and those between highlight and midtones are known as 1/4 tones.
As can be seen in Table 2, the tonal curve redistributes the shades by allocating more to the shadows and quarter tones and reducing the number of shades in the lighter areas.
Curves with more complex shapes can be similarly used to accentuate the one-quarter and three-quarter tones perhaps, or whatever is needed.
