Rangefinder
The rangefinder is distinguished by its viewfinder. The rangefinder uses a superimposed image in the viewfinder which moves with the focus on the lens.

Rangefinder
Instrument for measuring distances from a given point, usually based on slightly separated views of the scene provided by mirrors or prisms. May be built into non-reflex cameras.

Rangefinder
This camera featues a viewfinder separate from the picture-taking lens, and is thus different from a SLR.

RANGEFINDER - An instrument for measuring the distance from the observer to a particular object, as for adjusting the focus of a camera. A rangefinder is included as an integral part of many cameras as a focusing aid.

Rangefinder - A camera with this feature actually calculates the distance between it and the subject, notifying the user when the subject is in focus.
Raw Data - Uncompressed data that comes from the CCD.

Rangefinder
A device included on many direct vision cameras as an aid in focusing. It assesses subject distance (usually by comparing two images), and displays this information in the viewfinder.

Rangefinder
A type of viewfinder that uses one lens for focusing light onto the focal plane, and another for framing your image. Optically, a rangefinder is much less complicated, and therefore less expensive, than an SLR configuration.

35mm Rangefinder
With the knowledge that the fabled, finely-engineered Leica M7 is the $4,400, 800-pound gorilla in the room, let’s look at some 35mm rangefinder cameras that are more affordable to the average photo buff.

Rangefinder
When you shoot pictures with a less expensive or compact digital camera, you won't be looking through the lens, as with a DSLR camera. You'll look through a separate viewer, which is typically above and to the right or left of the lens.

Rangefinder cameras such as the Leica dominated photojournalism and fine arts photography for decades. They were quiet, small, and their large, bright viewfinders made it easy to focus and compose images.

For example, the back focus distance (distance from the rearmost lens element to the film plane) on EOS cameras is 44mm, but on Leica rangefinder cameras it's 27.8mm.

I use a Minolta CLE rangefinder camera and made an attachment plate from 1/4 inch plywood to which I fasten the camera. I mount this plate to my "L" bracket, with a 1/4x20 carriage bolt and wing nut.

For Christmas, my parents bought me a simple rangefinder camera. While it did have a built in light meter, the exposure and focus had to be evaluated and manually set.
