A red window could be used to view frame numbers of rollfilm; any red light which leaked beyond the film backing would not fog the film; and red lighting could be used in darkrooms.

The paper has markings on the back so you could advance the film by looking through a red window in the old days before rapid wind levers. These markings were for 645 (16 shots) , 6 x 6 (12 shots) and 6 x 9 (8 shots) formats.

The lighting was late afternoon partially shuttered window light and the exposure was 1/4 sec at f8. The RAW files were converted to 16 bit TIFF using Capture One Pro.

The visual frame counters are two small red windows, similar to those used on the much loved box brownie of many yester years. There is a slide to close the red windows when not being used.

Shapes made from either card or metal which when added to a suitable light source can be projected onto "a photographic subject" e.g. a shuttered window effect onto a table.

I have heard the window metaphor before, however ‘seeing' the metaphor with the shuttered window example makes it come together much better for me. Thank you for the great article. Lyn ...

Many birders use these because the car acts as a blind and birds approach closer than they will if you stand outside the car where they can see you. Most clamp onto a partly lowered window and support a ball head or quick release system.
