Noise Reduction
By Vincent Bockaert
For the past 4 years I have spent hundreds of hours researching methods to reduce noise from digital camera images.

Noise reduction techniques
Digital images can be prone to noise due to the visual effects of electronic errors of the camera's sensor.

Power reduction
A flash mode that's used to reduce the power of the output to quarter or half power. Some of the more advanced flashguns can reduce the output to 1/64 power which is useful for macro photography.

Vibration Reduction (VR) systems compensate for image blur caused by small, involuntary movements (from unsteady hands, shooting from a moving vehicle, etcs) Known as camera shake.

When to use vibration reduction and image stabalization
Many Nikon and Canon lenses now come with vibration reduction (Nikon) and image stabalization (Canon) options that you can either turn on or off.

Reduction
If you look at images reduced to fit your screen you can't see the finest details.

reduction
(1) the amount of, or the act of, thinning an ink with a compatible solvent; (2) a decreased size or area of an original copy, made photographically in a camera, or manually by pantograph, or dividers.

Noise Reduction Software
Figure 6: Noisy Image
For those photographers who are willing to spend a little cash, there are noise reduction programs that can be purchased.

Noise Reduction Software
There is a number of image editing software that can be used to reduce noise in a digital image after you have taken them.

Noise reduction software is often employed by digital cameras to reduce the appearance of noise in an image.

Noise Reduction
This is also a good time to consider using some sort of noise reduction on the image. Anti-aliasing color works best at the full resolution of the image. See my anti-aliasing color tutorial for more.

Noise Reduction
A major picture quality difference between a digital compact and a DSLR is that the compact produces photos with more noise, similar to the 'grain' of a high ISO traditional film.

Sweet Reduction
There are plenty of things you can put on top of a pie: ice cream, sugar, whipped cream, syrup, cookies, cherries - the list goes on and on.

Noise Reduction - Some cameras that offer long shutter speeds (exceeding 1 second) usually have a noise reduction (NR) feature that is either automatic or can be enabled in the menu.

Noise Reduction Techniques Using Adobe Photoshop.
One way to reduce noise in a digital image is to make a black frame during the shoot and then sandwich it with the noisy shot.

Noise reduction - the process by which a camera or imaging software removes noise from digital images.

Noise Reduction
As desired. Multiple conversions can be made with and without NR for further merging/masking.

Noise reduction. A technology used to cut down on the amount of random information in a digital picture, usually caused by long exposures at increased sensitivity ratings.

Noise reduction
In noise reduction mode, the camera takes two shots: the normal shot and one with the same exposure time but with the shutter closed.

Noise Reduction
Digital SLRs with long shutter speed capabilities normally offer a noise reduction feature. Noise reduction (NR) is sometimes an automatic function of the digital camera.

Noise Reduction
A process within a digital camera's image processor in which the artifacts caused by 'pushed' ISO ratings and/or other electrical or heat-related artifacts are suppressed or eliminated in an image ...

Redeye reduction.
There are a number of ways of dealing with redeye. The first, and generally most effective, way is to move the flash as far away as possible from the lens or point the flash head away from the subject (ie: bounce the light).

red-eye reduction
Using a flash can cause subjects in the final print to have red eyes. This is caused by the reflection of the flash burst on the iris of the eye.

RED EYE REDUCTION - A feature of some cameras or flash units that is meant to reduce the effect of red eye by emitting multiple bursts of light immediately before the picture is taken.

Red-Eye Reduction - This flash mode actually sets of a short flash that causes the irises in the subjects eyes to close thereby eliminating the red-eye in the final image.

Red-eye reduction mode. A mode that fires a preliminary flash to close the iris of the eye before firing the main flash to take the picture.
Red-eye. An effect that causes peoples eyes to look red in flash exposures.

RED EYE REDUCTION- We have all seen "red Eye" in still photos. It is when the flash reflects off the back of a person's eyes and they appear to glow red in the picture- thus "red eye.

Red-Eye Reduction Mode - A special flash mode whereby a pre-flash or a series of low-powered flashes are emitted before the main flash goes off to expose the picture. This causes the pupil in the human eye to close and helps eliminate red-eye.

Reduction in size of data. Compression of images, audio and video is provided by a wealth of different compression algorithms, which can be classified as either lossy or lossless.

The reduction of data to reduce the size of a file; compression can be lossy (for example, JPEG images) or lossless (for instance, TIFF images); lossy images have a greatly reduced file size.

Noise-reduction software works. This can be an important tool to have with your image-processing program. Photoshop CS2 introduced a noise-reduction filter, but to be honest, it doesn't work very well.

Noise reduction:
When a slow shutter speed is used (1/30 sec. and lower), the image degrades due to the buildup of electronic signal ("noise"). Software in the digital camera automatically compensates to reduce that noise.

Noise Reduction
This camera feature eliminates visual 'noise' from your picture when you are shooting at long shutter speeds (more than 1 second).

Noise-reduction practices will impact sharpening practices; reduce noise before sharpening.

Noise Reduction
Some cameras have a noise reduction facility which attempts to reduce noise effects.

Noise Reduction: Depending upon the level of noise you find acceptable, this may be an important step. I'd recommend using a more advanced noise-removal tool than Photoshop's, such as NoiseWare or Noise Ninja.

red-eye reduction
common photography problems
What causes red eye in photographs is a very common question. What is Red Eye
There are probably millions of family albums with red eye in the photographs.

Red-eye reduction flash works best when the subject isn't too far away and looks directly into the camera.

Red-eye reduction special effects are standard tools for almost all software editing programs. Essentially, red-eye reduction allows you to insert more natural colors in place of glowing red eyes.

Red-eye reduction techniques will be less effective when photographing people with dilated pupils.[citation needed] ...

A small reduction in color saturation is usually acceptable (and unavoidable), but changes in hue should be prevented whenever possible.

Contrast Reduction Mask:
This mask is commonly referred to as CRM mask and is self explanatory. The area that you need to be careful about is reducing the contrast so much that the print may start to appear too flat.
Shadow Contrast Increase Mask: ...

VIBRATION REDUCTION: At this point in time, Nikon, Canon and Sigma manufacture zoom lenses in the range of 80-400mm with their own brand of built in stabilization.

"One stop reduction in light due to a faster shutter (to 1/250) requires opening the aperture by one more stop (going to f/11 from f/16)."
Wrong stop. It should be going from f/11 to f/8.

Red-eye Reduction
A system that causes the pupils of a subject to shrink by shining a light prior to the taking of the flash picture. This prevents the red-eye effect.

Dilution - reduction in the strength of a liquid by mixing it with an appropriate quantity of water.
Dimensional stability - substance's ability to remain unchanging in size when subjected to processing and drying.

Contrast Reduction When the Sun is Low When the sunlight is low to the horizon, contrast is reduced. Contrast is significantly lower than when the sun is higher in the sky. The lower the sun is to the horizon, the lower the contrast will be.

Tip: Red Eye Reduction
When using an onboard flash to take pictures of people, you've probably come across red eyes a few trines. Red eye is caused by your camera's flash reflecting of the retina of your subject.

Vibration Reduction
Is Vibration Reduction important on a macro lens? If you’re planning to use a tripod at all times then no.

noise, noise reduction
Image noise is the additional signal generated by the electrical activity in the sensor.
Noise is mostly visible on uniform surfaces (like blue skies) and in shadow areas.

Color Noise Reduction is less often needed, but images from some cameras may need it more than others. It shows up as random patterns of rainbow colored sparkles where they aren't supposed to be.

Digital Noise Reduction. Cleanup process used when transferring analog video signals into the digital domain.

Adobe's Digital Negative format ...

VR (Vibration Reduction) doesn't help much with sports photography, as the moving subjects require at least as high shutter speed as camera shake would. VR (IS for Canon lenses) IS useful, overall, but it adds a lot to the cost of the lens.

FOR VIBRATION REDUCTION:
Always use a cable release. If your camera can take an electronic one, prefer it over a mechanical.
.
If you cannot use a cable release, at least use the self-timer.
.

Recycling Time The time necessary for an electronic flash to recharge and be ready for the next picture, it often depends on the type and condition of the battery and the guide number of the flash. Red-Eye Reduction (Speedlight mode) Nikon ...

The Vibration Reduction or Image Stabilization system is usefull in getting sharp pictures from these utrazoom cameras.
