It seems that the color balancing works better if you work on lighter colors. In a lighting situation like the one above, where there are a lot of reflected colors around, especially the green from the trees, you need all the help you can get.
While basic sunlight might be rated 5500k, finding this number in the real world doesn't happen very often (smog, time of day, some degree of clouds and the real biggie, reflected color of objects around the subject alter the actual CT).

a pigment which not only reflects a visible wavelength but is activated by most of the remaining absorbed light to re-emit it as color of a longer wavelength, which results in reinforcement of the reflected color.
the horizon and not in the image so exposure problems are greatly reduced. Also, clouds in the sky often light up dramatically and in some cases, reflect the light to other clouds until you find yourself under a wonderful canopy of reflected color.
