Both Nikon and Canon put colored trim rings on some of their lenses (gold for Nikon, red for Canon), and I usually wrap these with black electrician's tape to eliminate reflection.
This photograph of a bird was taken in the late afternoon when reflections are at their second best time (second to mornings). It was also a shallow puddle that doesn't get the wind ripples that would occur in a larger body of water.
Extremely fine pile applied to the surface can absorb these reflections.

Antireflection coating

Using Reflections
Again, our brain seems clever at resolving a three dimensional scene with the aid of reflections.
Direct reflection, i.e. the glinting reflections from white and shiny objects which cause bleaching of the highlights in a photograph. Using a diffuse light source, i.e. a light source of large area, rather than a point source can reduce the problem.

Keeping reflections down is a pretty tricky thing, it's one of the hardest things we deal with as product photographers. The most important thing you'll want to read up on is "angle of incidence" (do a google search to find info on it).
The best reflections occur when the sun is low in the sky, so we’re back to sunrise and sunset shooting in most cases.

Avoid bright reflections, and other "hot-spots". This will either force the camera to under-expose the rest of the shot, or cause the camera to blow out the highlights on the brightest parts of the shot.
