Photography ReflectionReflector

Stray Reflections
Just like you watch your background for stray objects, you need to watch your reflection for stray objects.

Figure 14: Reflections Layer Mask
Examination of the image, with this mask in place, showed that the mask created the desired tonality in the mountain reflection, but it caused the sky to become too dark.

Controlling Reflections in Impossibly Reflective Objects
As most product photographers know, lighting and photographing highly reflective objects can be somewhat challenging.

Reflecting On Reflections

Q) Do you have any suggestions on photographing through glass at museums? I want to capture a dinosaur exhibit.

This may solve the problem of light from the lighting units reflecting off the subject surface, but unfortunately there are two great disadvantages: it requires more lights than most photo labs have, and you still have reflections.

This photograph of a bird was taken in the late afternoon when reflections are at their second best time (second to mornings). It was also a shallow puddle that doesn't get the wind ripples that would occur in a larger body of water.

Q: After returning from my first dive trip using my new camera, I discovered several photos were affected by reflections on the dome. Are these reflections caused by the strobes? Are they too close to the camera?

Reflections and Glare: Many subjects reflect glare that detracts from the quality of the image.

Reflections
Out-of-control reflections can hurt your image; controlled ones can enrich it. Tips: Keep the subject in full sun, the reflecting surface, such as water, in shade.

Reflections
Are rays of light which strikes a surface and bounce back again. Specular reflection occurs on even, polished surfaces; diffuse reflection occurs on uneven surfaces, when light scatters.

Reflections
Take advantage of puddles and reflective surfaces to capture your light sculptures. Reflections will add another dimension to the sculpture and remove any doubt that your image has been created on a computer.

Reflections
Theory - Part I
Well, let's begin with some words about the theory. The formula starts with a perfect square (marked blue in illustration A). Now we divide the base of the square into two equal parts.

Reflections are not always bad. They can add modeling to a shiny object by the way they bend and follow curves. You can even place strips of paper or other materials so they are reflected by the object without themselves being in the picture.

Reflections of city lights on a wet pavement are more immediately apparent to us than the discomforts of rain. The weather often tries our patience and sometimes we cannot get the shot we want, but if we do, everyone will wonder how we got so lucky.

Reflections are an easy way to create unusual and stunning imagery.
Here a few tips for shooting reflections: ...

Reflections can lead to flare and reduced contrast. Multi-layer coatings, which reduce this effect, are highly desirable in any filter.

Using Reflections
Again, our brain seems clever at resolving a three dimensional scene with the aid of reflections.

Keeping reflections down is a pretty tricky thing, it's one of the hardest things we deal with as product photographers. The most important thing you'll want to read up on is "angle of incidence" (do a google search to find info on it).

The best reflections occur when the sun is low in the sky, so we’re back to sunrise and sunset shooting in most cases.

Revealing Reflections
Mirrors, windows and shiny surfaces can add a new dimension.

Internal Reflections
Another difference between film and digital is the degree to which the medium itself reflects light.

Pure CSS Reflections
Many might not be aware that, with CSS, we can achieve reflections quite easily in all webkit-based browsers, which represent roughly 20% of all browser usage. The key is in the vendor-specific, -webkit-box-reflect property.

Shadows and reflections can be part of the photo. In the picture to the left, NYI Instructor Jerry Rice used glossy blue paper as the background. At first glance, you might think this is the blue of the sky.

Avoid bright reflections, and other "hot-spots". This will either force the camera to under-expose the rest of the shot, or cause the camera to blow out the highlights on the brightest parts of the shot.

Coating against reflections between lens groups Edit
Modern lenses are coated with a very thin layer of antireflective material (like magnesium fluoride or calcium fluoride).

These filters can be used to darken blue sky, remove reflections off shiny surfaces, saturate colors, or be used as neutral-density filters.

It means that the film/cell pad is looking directly at what the lens is showing, but the operator is looking through reflections. The operator can see the image because his eye is looking through 3 mirrors! ...

When the pavement is wet from a recent rain, the reflections of the city’s lights are fantastic. Even when it’s raining, I’ll go out and shoot because I love the look of a city at this time.

Well, polarizers are useful for cutting reflections from water and glass (ie: non-metallic) surfaces.

Mirrored Portrait Photography and Reflections
'Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all', asked one fairy tale character.

Highlights like glare on water and other actual sun reflections should be avoided when possible and should never be used for metering purposes.

But some light - such as blue skies or reflections from non-metallic objects - is polarised, so that the waves all vibrate on the same plane.

To emphasize the translucent, crystalline quality of his subjects by avoiding the bright white reflections so common in glass.

If you love taking photos of landscapes and other outdoor shots, it will greatly help remove the glare and unwanted reflections. At the same time, they offer richer and more saturated colors especially the sky.

- Polarizing Filter: A polarizing filter cuts reflections from water or glass which gives a subtle look and objects do not appear very shiny. It also enhances colors and reduces haze.

See the tiny reflections centered in the middle of the pupils? These reflections would not appear like this in person unless you happened to be holding a tiny flashlight directly into her eyes while you looked at her.

The only other thing you will want to do to make a good exposure of a painting behind glass is to watch out for reflections. It sounds simple but it is easy to completely overlook these at the time you take the picture.

A filter for eliminating glare and reflections which attached to the front of your lens (normally just SLR's). Just like your polarized sunglasses it will get rid of glare, the polarizer filter does the same for your digicam.

It reduces glare, such as light reflections you get from water, glass, and other non-metallic surfaces. These filters are often used to give lackluster skies a darker and more dramatic hue.

Polarizer - A photographic filter for eliminating glare and reflections. Just like your polarized sunglasses get rid of annoying glare, the polarizer filter does the same for your digicam. However - there are 2 types, linear and circular.

A photographic filter designed to eliminate reflections from glass and water, including water in foliage, to intensify the color of the sky and color saturation in general.

Nano Crystal Coat An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon that virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths. Find out more.

Flare results from internal reflections within the lens and causes images to be "washed out", or causes bright spots to appear when a bright light (e.g. the sun) is in the picture.

Direct reflection, i.e. the glinting reflections from white and shiny objects which cause bleaching of the highlights in a photograph. Using a diffuse light source, i.e. a light source of large area, rather than a point source can reduce the problem.

The second filter is a Polarizing filter which is useful for removing reflections of water surfaces and in windows. When shooting landscapes, you will also see the sky getting a much darker and richer blue color when using a polarizer filter.

Non-image-forming light scattered by reflections within a lens or enlarger/camera interior which reduces image contrast and detail.
Flare can affect film by causing a lowering of image contrast.
(see Contrast, Distortion, Multicoating & Hood) ...

Glossy will give you richer blacks, but more reflections. Matte makes it very difficult to get a rich black. Pearl or semi-gloss is usually a good compromise. Glossy fiber dries to a sheen that is less reflective than glossy RC.

Because of this a polarising filter can do two things: remove white haze from the sky rendering it a deep blue, and remove white reflections from surfaces revealing their true colour.

One downside, though (and this might not apply to the high-end brands) is reflections. If there are small points of light in my scene, I will occasionally get a ghosting of the light on the opposite side, which can totally ruin an image.

- Where landmarks can be included in the frame, as well as reflections on water.
