Techniques Glossary TLR Twin-lens reflex.
A camera with two lenses the upper one is the viewfinder lens that has a mirror reflex view and the bottom one is the taking lens.

Reflex Mirror The mirror that reflects the light passing through the lens upward to the prism for viewing. Relative Illumination Illumination around the periphery of the image field.

Mirror, or reflex lenses, have awful bokeh. This is because they have a relay mirror in the front of the lens that blocks the central part of the lens' aperture.

The word "reflex" in there refers to a mirror used to reflect light from the lens up into the viewfinder. SLRs also have glass pentaprisms or pentamirrors on the top, which explains the protruding section on top of the camera.

Single lens reflex cameras generally cost more, but provide you with more control over the settings, allowing you to be more effective in shooting sports.

Twin-Lens Reflex
Less available now than in their heyday, the twin-lens reflex uses two identical lenses, one mounted above the other. The upper lens is used for focusing and the lower forms the image on the film.

Single-lens-reflex systems. Macro SLR photography usually means a continuous-focus lens, allowing a range from infinity down to 1:1.

There are a few Medium Format cameras which have two separate lenses on the camera, one above the other. These cameras are known as Twin Lens Reflex (TLR) cameras.

Overview: Sony took the "reflex" (a mirror that flips out of the way at the moment of exposure) out of DSLR and replaced it with a translucent mirror to create its new line of "SLT" (Single-Lens Translucent mirror) cameras.

Digital single-lens reflex or DSLR. The DSLR is the great grandchild of the traditional single-lens-reflex camera, named so because the image that the lens sees is reflected by a mirror and prism system in the viewfinder.

DSLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex with the "Reflex" part referring to the mirror inside a DSLR. The mirror is needed to redirect the light coming through the lens up into the viewfinder.

SLR - Single Lens Reflex The fundamental principal of SLR type camera is the TTL (Through-The-Lens) mechanism. TTL means that the scene is viewed, focused and metered directly through the lens as shown in Fig B.

The key was that I had made it into the realm of the SLR (Single Lens Reflex) - the camera had changeable lenses, you looked through the lens, and it made the required wholesome 'clunk' sound when triggered.
