Remote shutter releases are an essential part of every photographer's toolkit. They let you take photos without touching the camera, which can be important if you're using a tripod and want to avoid camera blur, particularly in bulb mode.
Use a remote shutter release or your cameras self-timer. The moon isn't the only subject where this practice is important. When you click your shutter button on your camera, you are in fact introducing vibration, which blurs images.
Two more things that can really help, but are not needed, are a remote shutter release, and also a lens hood, which can help block surrounding ambient light (such as if you're around a surrounding city, or with street lights).
As I mentioned above, the shutter speed needs to be set to b or bulb (bulb refers to the old fashioned type of remote shutter release, on which you literally squeezed and rubber bulb and triggered the shutter with a burst of compressed air).

A couple of reasons as to why this image looks so sharp, is due to the use of a tripod and a remote shutter release. As it was not a hand held shot, I also turned off the IS (image stabalisation) option on the actual lens.
