Rim lighting

RIM LIGHTING Rim lighting is often used when making profile portraits. Rim lighting is the same as backlighting, where the subject is lighted from behind causing the facial features of the profile to be highlighted (fig. 7-11).

I have long been a fan of rim lighting and, given the opportunity, would prefer to use it over a single light source.

RIM LIGHTING - Occurs when the main light is placed behind the subject so that the subject's face is completely in shadow, but there is a rim of light around the subject's head, like the corona in a full eclipse.

After you get the hang of using the flash outdoors, try a couple variations on this theme by positioning the subject so the sun illuminates the hair from the side or the back, often referred to as rim lighting.

When backlighting is used behind partially translucent subjects, like leaves or human hair, it creates a bright fringe called rim lighting that helps separate subjects from their surroundings.

5.Being in the outdoors does not mean you would not need the flash. In fact, the flash greatly helps in giving just enough illumination on your subject. You can also try rim lighting, where the sun illuminates the subject's side or back.

For example, front lighting will reveal detail but not texture, while side lighting will emphasis texture and form by creating shadows. Backlighting is the primary tool for creating silhouettes and the golden halo effect of rim lighting.

Additional lights broaden the potential to illuminate a backdrop, to create separation from the background by rim lighting the subject from behind, or as an accent light.

Now you have backlighting, one of the most dramatic types of light in nature. You can capture silhouetted subjects, rim lighting, and transillumination (light coming through translucent subjects like leaves and flower petals).
