A flashgun that has a circular electronic tube that is positioned around the camera lens or on the filter thread.
Ring flash: A ring flash is a donut-shaped flash unit that attaches around the front of your lens. It provides perfectly even lighting with virtually no shadows. This flat lighting works very well for many close-up and macro subjects.

One new variant of the ring flash is Canon's Twin Lite that has two adjustable flash heads. It's almost like a camera mounted studio.
Ring flashes, with flash tubes arranged in a circle around the front of the lens, can be helpful in lighting at close distances. Ring lights have emerged, using white LEDs to provide a continuous light source for macrophotography.

We used a ring flash to create good, even lighting that would penetrate the small, intricate nooks and crannies of the shell. As the name suggests, a ring flash is circular.

A ringflash (or ring flash) is a toroidal (doughnut-shaped) flash unit that fits around the lens of a camera. As light comes from all sides of the lens, a ringflash provides an almost shadow-free kind of lighting.
Some cameras can be attached with a special close-up flash called a ring flash or ring light. This ring flash shines a diffused light all around your subject to allow proper exposure without harsh shadows.
I don't like to use ring flash for portrait or view of patient's smile. I prefer to use my Speedlite 420EX bounced. For macro dental photo, the use of ring flash is very important.

If I use it defocused (like in this shot), it acts like a huge ring flash. Many little hard lights wrap around the body and give it a wonderful three-dimensionality. Every single muscle is emphasized, even muscles directed straight at the camera.
The main light was an Alien Bee Ring Flash shot through a 56″ Moon Unit. The rim lighting was created using two Calumet Genesis 400 strobes. To give a little harsher light around the edges, no modifier was used on the back strobes.
When using two flashes make certain the triggering flash is not making pre-flashes. To avoid them, simply tilt or rotate its head a little. When "straight forward" is used here with two flashes, it should be understood as "almost straight forward".
Turn off your flash, if you don't have a macro ring flash (and if you're the kind of person that does, you probably don't need to read any of this).

Special flash equipment is sometimes used (ring flash - where the electronic flash goes around the lens) to get even lighting at such close quarters. Lovers of nature photography tend to see details that others miss.
A ring flash, which fits around the front of your lens, gives a strong directional light without the harsh shadows caused by in- or on-camera flash.
coins and stamps, using one can help create even illumination over the subject. For nature work though, the light ends up looking equally flat and even creating a situation that doesn't look, well, ... natural. I've never been a fan of ring flashes ...
