Saturation
A measure of the strength of colour in a photograph. Many software programs allow you to adjust saturation adding grey to make the image appear more monochrome or removing grey to produce rich, highly saturated colours.

Saturation refers to the actual amount or strength of color that is apparent in a photograph. Saturation describes the purity and intensity of a given color or set of colors.
Saturation adjustment
Saturation adjustment allows you to control the strength of color in the final image. Like the other parameters saturation can be adjusted in eleven steps from -1.0 to +1.0.

Saturation adjustment gives you control over how vivid the colors in your images are. The default setting is fairly well balanced, producing an inauthentic but not ludicrous level of saturation.

Hue/Saturation
I use Hue/Saturation adjustment layers to handle a few common problems. One of these is yellow grass. In photographs, grass and foliage tend to be a bit on the yellow side, particularly when lit by direct sunlight.

The saturation-based technique is closely related to the SOS technique, with the sRGB output level being measured at 100% white rather than 18% gray. The saturation-based value is effectively 0.704 times the SOS value.

Decrease the Saturation amount to -100, removing the color from the area inside the rectangle.

As you decrease saturation (top), colors become muddier and finally gray. As you decrease lightness (bottom), colors become darker and eventually black.
