Scanners have become an important part of the home office over the last few years. Scanner technology is everywhere and used in many ways: ...

Scanners have to have such high resolution though in order capture all the detail the slide has in it. Photographing a scene on either film or digital involves some loss of detail in the translation to photosites or film grain.

Scanner Cover
Tissue or Rice paper
Make a black box at least 6 inches deep to sit on top of your scanner. By having this depth you will ensure that it is always out of focus.

A scanner's dynamic range is measured by the manufacturer and expressed as a numeric value between 0.0 (white) to 4.0 (black) that indicates its ability to capture all values within the full dynamic range.

A. Slide Scanner:
This connects to your PC SCSI card and has its own power supply. Your 35 mm slide or negative is scanned, or read, into your computer, enabling (via software) the images to be shown on screen.

Scanners and Scanning Software
Scanners copy photographs or negatives as computer images. Scanning software programs like Epson Twain and HP PhotoSmart allow users to manipulate the resolution of the photograph being scanned.

SCANNER - Electronic device that captures an impression of an object (commonly a photographic print or other flat document) and converts it into a digital image which can be edited and saved on a computer.
SEGMENTED - See "Stitch" below.

SCANNER - An input device in which to capture a piece of artwork onto a computer as a digital file. A scanner uses light sensitivity to translate the picture into a pattern of dots.

Scanner
An optical device that converts images - such as photographs - into digital form so they can be stored and manipulated on computers.

Upload the photographs you'd like to convert to black and white to your hard drive. Place them in a folder that is easy to locate, preferably the desktop.

Scanner types are based on two technologies-those that utilize a photo-multiplier tube (PMT) or a charge-coupled device (CCD).

Scanner
This is a device you connect to your computer to scan or digitize old photo prints or other documents. A scanner has a glass surface similar to a photocopying machine on which you place the document face down, so it can be scanned.

Scanners are digital too, having sensors similar to cameras, and you can thus convert those slides (negatives too) to digital files. The better models include such features as multi-sampling, color correction, curve adjustment, amongst others.

Scanner profiling tools are sometimes provided by the manufacturer, or can be purchased as part of third party scanner software like Silverfast from LaserSoft.

scanner a device that converts images into computer-readable form. [This was one of the original ways to get a picture into a computer. Usually a flat bed...but can also be business card sized. A scanner can also be the side of a negative.

AirScanner Anti Virus "
Airscanner is probably the best free antivirus for your Windows mobile device and with the increased wireless connectivity of PDAs and Smartphones comes an increased threat from virus attacks. Its better being safe than sorry.

A.k.a. scanner-type CCD, these sensors are long and thin, and capture an image by recording a vast number of individual "exposures" while scanning across the picture frame. These are best suited for still subjects and continuous illumination.

If your scanner doesn't capture the subtle differentiations between grays (in black-and-white scans) and between colors (in color scans), then this information from the original is lost. This differentiation ability is called color depth or bit depth.

Because of scanners and nice printers, it's easy to make digital reproductions of any photograph. Even old family photos can be copied without altering or destroying the original, when a digital (dry) process has been used.

Many optical scanners are capable of gray scaling, using from 16 to 256 different shades of gray. However, gray scaling is only useful if you have an output device -- monitor or printer -- that is capable of displaying all the shades.

See-thru Scanjet scanner - A breakthrough in scanner design, the extra-thin see-thru scanners are versatile, portable, and transparent.

Some USB printers, scanners, and combination printer/scanner devices have built-in memory card reader ports. There is even a USB mouse that has a memory card reader built in.

This is done using an optical scanner that projects the film onto a CCD array and captures it in a raw digital format. Since the different types of microform are dissimilar in shape and size, the scanners are usually able to handle only one type.

CharacterizationThis is the process of creating an ICC profile that describes the unique colour characteristics of a devices used to process your stock photo, such as a monitor, scanner, colour printer, and printing press.

Digital darkroom is your computer, scanner, printer, and image editor software. I now try to imagine how each image I take will look on my computer monitor and what more I can or can't do with each image in my digital darkroom.

Not all scanners have quality lookup tables for scanning negatives, especially scanners under $1000. Whereas many film scanners in the $600-$1000 range can do a good enough job scanning a transparency to make an 17"x22" print.

Film scanners which will give you 10 megapixel images can be bought for under $500 and scanners which can give you 24 megapixel images can be bought for under $800.

Kodak contributes scanners and image science for this machine, and has authored an enhanced software package specifically to facilitate printing.

Believing the successful control of purified water to be a vital issue for immersion scanners to perform well on IC mass production lines without negatively affecting productivity, Nikon engineers concentrated on the development of this technology.

RAW - A RAW image file is a variety of image file that contains unprocessed (or minimally processed) data from the image sensor of a digital camera or image scanner, without processing them into a more common image format such as JPEG or TIFF.

Many scanners come with built-in negative carriers for 35mm film. Adapters are available for other film sizes. The negative is then lit from behind, much like an enlarger in a darkroom, to project the image for the scanner to read.

The Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED is a film scanner only. It has a resolution of 4000 dpi. The largest sheet of film this scanner can handle is 6x9cm.

Dynamic Range: The dynamic range or Optical Density of a scanner is a measure of the range of densities and the deepest shadow density that the scanner can see into and record information.

Capture times are similar to flatbed scanners, often measured in minutes per image
