The Scheimpflug principle states that the sensor plane, lens plane and plane of sharpest focus must all intersect along a line. In the diagram below, this intersection is actually a point since the line is perpendicular to your the screen.
By using the Scheimpflug principle, the 'plane of sharp focus' can be changed so that any plane can be brought into sharp focus.
Start by focusing on the subject, then use the lens's tilt feature to tilt the lens forward to align it with the subject plane of focus (per the Scheimpflug principle).
