Scrims are almost always used to shade a subject in direct sunlight. Direct sunlight is too harsh on people's faces. A scrim is usually cloth with a lot of fine holes in it.

self-timer - A mechanism built into the shutter release, used to release the shutter after a set period of time.
I shot it through a 3m x 2m scrim to soften the light right down. I nearly always shoot on aperture priority and flip the wheel to change it, as I want to get a load of different looks from the same shot. I like the f/1.
Soft lighting normally involves using large, diffused light sources such as softboxes, shoot through umbrellas or scrims and this can cause its own problems.
Here, you can see a large silk umbrella that is designed specifically for photography to create a quick setup light scrim. Usually I have an assistant hold it over the model or I attach it to a light stand anchored by sand bags.

You can increase the compression of your JPG images, or lower the image size to get more photos onto your camera, but if those 350 photos are for a wedding or other such memorable event, I wouldn't scrimp on memory size.
