Selenium-A chemical that is used to tone prints for longevity. Selenium leaves the prints with a silver look. Toned prints are less subject to light damage and oxidization.

Selenium.
Light-sensitive substance which, when used in a barrier-layer construction, generates electrical current when exposed to light. Used in exposure meters. Needs no external power supply.
Self-timer.

Selenium and silicon light meters use sensors that are photovoltaic. These sensors generate a voltage proportional to light exposure. Selenium sensors generate enough voltage for direct connection to a meter.

Selenium cell - light sensitive cell used in many types of exposure meters. It generates electricity in direct proportion to the amount of light falling upon its surface.

Because selenium lies directly below sulfur in the periodic table, the chemical properties of the selenocyanate ion, SeCN- , are similar to those of the analogous thiocyanate ion, SCN- .

Kodak's Selenium toner is a cumulative poison. I splashed about in it gloveless, with a cigarette in my mouth totally unaware of the harm that I have now done myself. . Then there is the waste of so much water for washing prints and film.

To prolong print life, darkroom technicians often toned their prints in Selenium, which preserved the prints.

Lee, Wood, and Drago published the first paper dealing with the stability properties of a variety of toned images (including selenium.) They found that selenium acted very well as a protective treatment and in theory we would've (and did) guess that ...

Remember, it doesn't matter if you're printing through texture screens, or selenium toning, or using Photoshop on your computer.

Last week, I touched on the idea of creating selenium or other split toned versions while discussing various options to enhance your black and white images.

A selenium cell generates electricity in proportion to the amount of light falling upon its surface. A cadmium sulfide cell offers a resistance to a small electric charge when light falls upon it.

In a conventional darkroom, sepia toning -- unlike other types of toning, such as selenium -- is a multistep process.

Sepia toner is a suspected carcinogen and most dangerous of all is Selenium toner (selenium is an extremely poisonous heavy metal). Most chemical toners extend the longevity of the print, but some, including blue toner, don't.

Using a light meter, a photographer can determine the film speed and shutter speed he will need to ensure that his film receives the proper exposure. The most common light meters use selenium, silicon or CdS (Cadium Sulfide) sensors.

To replicate the results of combined sepia/selenium toning, the shadows are adjusted to be cooler (Figure 22). To print this out, I let Photoshop handle the color management and set the print driver to No Color Adjustment.

I even used a real 1950s selenium-cell (solar-powered) light meter as best I could. When I needed spot readings, I reverted to a 1960s CdS meter, with a mercury battery of course. No electronics here! ...

xerography
a copying process that utilizes a selenium surface and electrostatic faces to form an image.
x-height
the height of the lowercase letters of a type face that do not have ascenders or decenders.

He was then able to continue this process again when he printed the final image, dodging and burning as necessary, and using selenium toning to create stunning images of full tonality.

May be this extra will help, photo conductive material used in exposure meters as alternative to selenium-based or silicon blue photocells. Its electrical resistance decreases as the light falling on it increases.

Adjusting the saturation slider to a negative value warms the image while moving it in a positive direction cools the image. These tones mimic traditional darkroom tints of warm, sepia, selenium and cyanotype.

the image is very close to the finished file, but can be refined with normal Photoshop controls for levels or curves, and even color balance if the preference is for a warm tone black-and-white (like sepia) or something cooler to simulate a selenium ...

Exposure performs other editing functions as well. The options include a monochromatic toning filter set (blue, gold, sepia, selenium and sulphide) that allows you to re-create the look of old-fashioned image recording techniques.

Selenium, sepia or blue toning, infrared effects or motion blur filters, the possibilities are endless. Your own imagination or creativity is the only limit to what can be achieved.
