Self timer option
Take a look at your holiday snaps from last year. Have you noticed how seldom the photographer appears in any photograph.

Two cool features every point and shooter should know about are the self timer and the exposure compen sation setting. The self timer is most frequently used when the photographer needs to be included in the picture.

Self Timer

This doesn't put the camera into self-timer mode - that's on the top-plate drive mode switch - but instead allows you to select between a 2 second and 12 second delay when you are in self-timer mode.

Now that you have your UltraPod in hand, you can explore another under-used feature found on almost every digital camera: the self timer.

Self timer. Has its uses.
Exposure lock . Has its uses as well.
Multiple exposure switch. Probably near the wind on lever, if you have one. Allows you to make multiple exposures on to one frame.

The self timer usually has a delay of between 2-10 sec., and can be used to allow the photographer to get into the frame.

Using the self timer instead of a cable release is a nice way to get a low light photo taken without touching the camera.

It has the cocking lever seperate from the film advance lever, this helps save a photo if the self timer does not go off, plus, you can do funcky double exposure shots with home made filters.

Enable your mirror lock-up and self timer, if you're shooting in controlled conditions on a tripod.

If your camera has a self timer, (shutter release delay) using it and tripod will allow you to jump into the picture, maybe twice! This double exposure was made made entirely on camera.

best way is to find a stable place and use the self timer, especially if you are taking a night scene or using the tele mode.

When using a slow shutter speed, instead of pressing the shutter button with a finger, release it with the self timer, a cable release, or a remote control. Your pictures will be sharper.

I was standing up to set up my self timer again, and someone happened to be exposing as I stood up. What they saw was something they called Ê"Windy Chrisʼ. By the end of the evening everyone had a self portrait similar to what you see below.

Use mirror lockup if you have it and always use a cable release or the self timer on your camera. Never raise the center column more than a few inches.

When this feature is set, you press the shutter, and the camera doesn't expose your film or image sensor for a pre-set number of seconds. Setting your self timer to 5 seconds will allow for any vibrations to cease when pressing the shutter button.

If your LCD display still turns off within a couple of seconds, repeat the steps above until you get to the 'Custom Menu Setting'. At this screen check to see if Auto Self Timer is set to Long, like the example image below.

Some advanced models included depth-of-field preview, mirror lock-up, spot metering, and a few extras such as diopter correction, self timer, PC terminal, and AE-lock. These were all the features photographers needed to take great pictures.

For shots that require slower shutter speeds, you'll require a tripod and a remote shutter release button to avoid shaking the tripod as you press the shutter (though you can use the camera's self timer for this).
