Sepia Tone History
Originally made from the Sepia cuttlefish, sepia pigment was used to treat printed photos to make them more durable.

Creating sepia toned photographs is a favorite way of many photographers to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Sepia tone is a warm brown tone that is often associated with images from the late 19th century.

Sepia tone refers to the coloring of a black and white photographic print that has been toned with a sepia toner to simulate the faded brownish color of some early photographs.

Ask for sepia tone printing. When giving that film for exposing/developing/printing, tell them that you want the pictures to be printed in sepia tone (or any other single color). You can even get green, red, blue, orange, any shade.

Getting Going
So how do you start? Well, you probably have software on your computer already which will let you do much of this. If you have a recent Mac, you have iPhoto built in.

Because sepia tone softens the light in a photo, you'll get the best results with an image that's exposed well, with good contrast and a fairly full range of shades of white, gray and black.

And btw I agree with Amy about sepia tone. I shot my girls ten years ago when they were 1 and 3 on the beach.

Black & White or Sepia tones in Portrait Photography
Decades ago, it used to be all the rage to use sepia-tone prints in portrait photography. Nowadays, you'll find more variety in creative color imaging than that.

Sepia tones are warm and somewhat nostalgic, and are very flattering for portraits of people as well as other subjects like landscapes and nude studies.

Among other things you can change the camera's custom WB setting... ...or apply a sepia tone. Of course the benefit to creating output from the Raw file is that you avoid any image quality loss that a further round of JPEG compression may introduce.

In addition to color, some cameras let you also shoot images in black and white or in an antique sepia tone. Some even have modes that mimic the colors captured by color film.

There's also a Colorize checkbox in the lower left that isn't very useful for normal image optimization but does work great for creating sepia toned or other colorized black and white versions of an image.
