Sepia toner is a suspected carcinogen and most dangerous of all is Selenium toner (selenium is an extremely poisonous heavy metal). Most chemical toners extend the longevity of the print, but some, including blue toner, don't.

Sepia tone refers to the coloring of a black and white photographic print that has been toned with a sepia toner to simulate the faded brownish color of some early photographs.

During the printing process, photographers regularly tone their prints with different chemicals to protect them from aging and to achieve a certain 'look' to their images. A photographer might use a sepia toner to get an aged look.
