Sharpening
One of the most frequently-used yet most commonly misunderstood post-processing operations has to be "sharpening" -- technically "unsharp masking" or USM for short.

Sharpening & Softening
In conventional photography an image is either sharp or unsharp. There is not much that can be done about that.

Sharpening a Fine-detailed Subject
Figure 3 shows an example of a photograph that contains a lot of fine-edge detail, where the Sharpening sliders in the Detail panel needed be taken to extremes.

Smart Sharpening
Even though Photoshop is already an extremely impressive piece of software, Adobe keeps hard at work looking for ways to make it even better. The newly released Photoshop CS2 is their latest giant step forward on that quest.

When to sharpen in your workflow
By John Paul Caponigro
It's Visual
While there's an ideal three-stage sharpening workflow, there's no one ideal magic setting for sharpening all images. Many considerations must be weighed throughout the process.

Default settings with NO sharpening were used for all RAW conversions.

Presently, however, a new technique for improved sharpening is introduced which can be used with virtually any image sharpening technique of the user's choice.

However, sharpening them in photo editing software can be tricky using conventional methods. If you use the "sharpen" filter you often get a lot of added noise and an artificial look.

Sharpening Images with Photoshop
Usually, the first thing I do after converting a RAW file is to sharpen my image. Due to the way your cameras sensor works, a certain amount of blur is always introduced (see.

Sharpening - Sharpening essentially enhances the edges of an object in a digital image to make them look sharper.
Shutter - This is the mechanism on the camera that can open and close to introduce light to the image sensor and/or film.

Sharpening
Sharpening in a digital sense is the enhancing of edge detail. It is performed by a mathematical formula which is applied across the image. Put simply it enhances the visibility of a boundary between light and dark tones in an image.

Sharpening
Digital images are inherently soft due to the nature of pixels and how we perceive the images they collectively produce.

Your image will now be back in the main workspace, but it may be a little soft from your adjustment. To sharpen it, use one of the tools within the Sharpen options under the Filters tab, such as the Unsharp Mask. Click OK and you're done.

Auto sharpen will identify edges in your picture and make them more defined, accentuating small details and giving the overall image a crisper look. And the dust and scratches command will eliminate minor imperfections in the picture.

Over-sharpening correction
Some image processing algorithms happen to introduce over-sharpening artefacts to the image.

Sharpening photos is easy to overdo—especially for web display. Oversharpened photos seem filled with razor-sharped edges and internal details that look as prickly as a bed of nails. And tiny halos appear on contrasty edges.

Sharpening is one of the most misused functions of Adobe Photoshop. Sharpen too little and your picture's fuzzy; sharpen too much and your photo will look "digital" in the worst way.

Noise Removal and Image Sharpening
Digital noise is present to some degree in every captured image. You need to reduce this digital noise, particularly if you are making a large print.

8.Once done, it's time to sharpen the image. First, choose the Image menu and select lab color in the Mode selection. Now, go to the channel window and choose lightness channel. Then, go to the Filter menu and choose Unsharp Mask under Sharpen.

Typically, image editing programs are used to sharpen and crop images and fix over and underexposed shots by adjusting their tonal range levels.

In this first example, we can compare a pre-sharpened, pre-color corrected image to one with more accurate colors and true-to-life texture. This is digital recovery, not enhancement.

Usually you're trying to sharpen the area of the photo where you've placed your subject; the result is that other elements of the photo will be out of focus.

It can be very romantic to sharpen details on certain items and leave others blurred. Focus on one rose and let rest of bouquet fall out. Sharpen one pearl in a necklace, or a gem in a ring, and let the rest go softer.

Photoshop's Unsharp Mask filter does a great job sharpening a soft image. It can't fix an image that is out of focus, but it does add an extra sparkle that makes an image come to life.

Digital EOS cameras assume you're going to be applying sharpening filters to the images once they arrive on your personal computer.

Finally, don't rely on image-editing "sharpening" tools to save images blurred by camera shake. While these tools will increase overall sharpness a small amount, they won't salvage images that are just plain blurry.
