TILT SHIFT LENSES: DEPTH OF FIELD
Tilt shift lenses enable photographers to transcend the normal restrictions of depth of field and perspective.

Silver halide-The silver crystals that make up an image on a negative or print. When exposed to light, they create an image.

Tilt-Shift Lenses
The shift part of the tilt-shift lens lets you take a picture of a building, from ground level, without the lines converging and making it look as though the building is falling over.

tilt-shift lens

A tilt-shift lens allows the photographer to make corrections to image perspective. With the shift movement the lens is moved up/down left/right while remaining parralel with the sensor.

Shift lens
[edit] Shift
In a subject plane parallel to the image plane, parallel lines in the subject remain parallel in the image.

Tilt-shift lenses are designed to shift on a rotating plane, allowing the lens element to slide left/right or up/down. There's a metal clip that releases tension, so the lens can be rotated to alter its position by 90 degrees.

What can you do with tilt-shift photography?

Tilt and Shift lens
Canon offers so-called Tilt and Shift Lenses. With these lenses you can control the angle of the focal plane and put most of the elements in your image (foreground and background) into the same focal plane.

This group of special lenses includes ultra-wide angle, extreme telephoto, shift lenses, variable focal length (ZOOM), and macro lenses. Most experienced Navy photographers who use a 35mm camera agree that a basic set of lenses is well worth having.

I used my Canon 17mm tilt-shift lens here for two reasons. Firstly, even though I was using a wide-angle lens on a full frame camera, I simply could not get the pond and the mountain into the photo at the same time.

Special lenses called shift lenses can move the front element relatively to the film plane thus keeping verticals straight. However failing this you could look for a viewpoint higher up so that you don't have to tilt the camera backwards.

Tilt and Shift lenses available in 35mm for Canon and Nikon systems don't let you use a tilt and a swing like view cameras. Instead you pivot the lens to determine the axis of the tilt.

Finding the right focusing point and the right tilt with a tilt/shift lens largely depends on your subject. Let's take the easiest possible example: patterned floor tiles.

Miniature Mode aims to replicate the effect of using a tilt/shift lens, to give the illusion of small scale.

So I was just out in the snow taking pictures and despite my best efforts ( wrapping my lens and body in saran wrap wrap and putting this in a ziplock and making a makeshift lens hood with stiff card stock) my lens is still slightly dirty to the ...

Of note in this category is the shift lens, used for architectural photography, which corrects (or helps correct) parallax error. In simpler terms, this lens helps keep vertical parallel lines parallel, instead of converging.

Special lenses such as shift lens or PC lens, fish eye lens, mirror lens or reflex lens will not be mentioned here. As these lenses are not common and hardly required by average camera users.

In the bad old days of film the best option was a special 'anamorphic' or shift lens which would correct the verticals for you.

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you about simulating the tilt-shift lens effect that is used mostly in photography. The goal of this technique is to achieve a really unique feel to the image as everything is miniatured or modeled.

Canon has two new shift lenses, and just pushed out the envelope on what is possible with their 17mm full-frame shift lens. This lens has been impossible to manufacture in all of history, and Canon is the world's first to figure it out.

Note that this document does not deal with the four Canon-built manual-focus lenses currently in the EOS-compatible lens lineup - the three TS-E tilt-shift lenses and the MP-E 65mm 5x macro lens.

Perspective control. Also known as tilt or shift lenses. Lenses that allow for correction of linear distortion resulting from high or low camera angle. Most are with gear or sliding mechanism and most require manual metering.

I used a small f/22 aperture and a tripod to mimic having a close object in sharp focus, as well as the distant horizon. Wide angle lenses do this better. Tilt and shift lenses would do a much better job.

To correct the effects of perspective, which mostly appear in architecture photography, some camera manufacturers offer shift lenses. Here the lens can be moved in parallel with the film level (camera back wall).

Shift
Movement on large format camera ( or special " shift lens " in other formats ) which can eliminate converging angles.
Shooting distance
Refers to the distance between the subject and the film plane.

This is the point which is parallel to the film and cannot be changed unless you use tilt/shift lenses or a view camera.
