Shutter time lag
Time between the instant the release is fully depressed and the actual moment of capture. This does not include the time when the release is half depressed to activate (if available) the autofocus system, etc.

 


Camera shutter times are normally specified in fractions of a second. Taking pictures on a sunny day, for example, can easily mean extremely brief exposures of 1/60 to 1/1000 of a second.

Your meter will tell you it wants longer and longer shutter times and chances are the f-stop will hit the full open setting on your lens.

You can understand the process even better if you set the shutter time to one second or slower. When you press the shutter button you should hear the mirror flip and then very quickly the snapping sound of the first curtain.

Many lower-end digital cameras have a lag in their shutter time, so this poses another problem if your subject is moving. A perfect example is trying to photograph your dog.

In this device, only one pixel shift has to occur to transfer from image area to storage area; thus, shutter times can be less than a microsecond and smear is essentially eliminated.

Here we are talking about seriously long shutter times of several seconds so nothing but a good sturdy tripod will do. The second piece of kit that would be very useful is a remote shutter release so you don't have to touch the camera at all.

When I tried it in a club, the long shutter times blurred everything. My wish list includes a couple of "L" series lenses at f/2.8 and I expect those will work much better than the f/5.6 on most of the lenses that I have right now.

It contains information about the time and date that an image was taken, together with exposure information such as ISO-speed, shutter time and aperture used.

Blurry Details Fix
The rocks in this image are a bit blurry. Because of the long shutter time this is likely due to camera shake. Digitally you can use levels to increase contrast and then sharpen the image to minimize the blur effect.

If the backlight within the camera's lens is dull (and the film is of normal speed), then the auto backlighting control will widen the aperture, make the flash brighter and extend the shutter timer.

But only do this once you know the correct shutter time you will be using.

When you click the shutter button, the camera quickly switches the mirror out of the way, so the image is directed at the exposed film. The mirror is connected to the shutter timer system, so it stays open as long as the shutter is open.
