Slave flash
A slave flash is triggered by the firing of your main flashgan. It has a light sensitive receptor.

Slave flashes.
Slave flashes are simply self-contained flash units which respond to external triggers of some kind. They're frequently used in studio situations.

Slave Flash Units
If your camera doesn't have a hot shoe or other flash connector, and many pocket cameras don't, you can use a slave flash unit.

A wireless master/slave flash outfit would really simplify the setup for this kind of work. For most of the bellows setups I positioned the flash units fairly close to the subject and used TTL flash metering.

If you don't have a hot shoe, a slave flash would be an alternative. These fire the flash when they sense another flash nearby going off.

The master will control one or more slave flash units. The slave units can be SB-600/800, or the new R-200 macro. The number of slave units is essentially unlimited.

In this arrangement, one master flash may be triggered by the camera shutter, while other flashes are triggered by the master. Some slave flash designs use the master flash's light itself as a trigger.

More and more flash accessories are hitting the market as more photographers turn to multiple slave flash units instead of the larger old-style flash units.

use the built-in as a fill flash in conjunction with the slave but sometimes I don’t. In the latter situation I simply select the lowest output setting. Light from the built-in is not recorded in the photo; it simply triggers the slave flash.

The flash units can be auxiliary flash units, connected to the camera by extension cords, or they can be slave flash units.
