Slave Sensor

Photography Slave flashSlave unit

Slave Sensor: A device with a photocell that triggers a flash unit when it senses light from another flash unit. The light from both flash units with be synchronized with the camera.

Infrared Slave Sensor:
Figure 29
The Infrared Slave Sensor for the StarFlash® was positioned with a purpose, unlike many competitors who place their sensor either to the front of the flash unit or on the back for convenience.

The Ikelite slave sensor reads the light from the camera's built-in flash via an external sensor hard-wired into the strobe.

Maybe you already have a cheap hot shoe-type flash that lacks either a sync terminal or a built-in slave sensor. No problem because Wein once again comes to the rescue. They offer a slave with its own hot shoe, as shown in this photo.

The flash that you fire from your radio or infra red trigger should be fitted with a diffused light (softbox or honeycomb) so that the light spreads enough to be picked up by the slave sensor on any other flash heads that you’re using.
