Snapshot - term once used to describe a photograph taken with the I (instantaneous) setting on cameras. The term originally came from rifle shooting, when little or no time is allowed for aiming.

Photojournalists are heavy users of ISO 800 color negative film. Grain is acceptable if you don't enlarge beyond 5x7. Contrast and color saturation are surprisingly good.

Printing snapshot images has just gotten a whole lot easier with the release of Epson's newest printing wonder- the PictureMate Zoom.

If you only want to shoot a couple of rolls on your dive holiday, and really want little more than souvenir snapshots, maybe a $20 disposable ("single-use") camera is all you need.

This article is where the fine art photographers begin to break ranks with the snapshot photographers. Up until now, the techniques have been fairly quick and easy to use (once you have built up some experience).

Fixed-focus, fixed-zoom lenses - These are the kinds of lenses on disposable and inexpensive film cameras -- inexpensive and great for snapshots, but fairly limited.

If you only take 4"x6" snapshots then these drawbacks are probably fine, but if you ever want to make enlargements beyond that you may find that your photos look disappointingly soft - not very sharply focussed.

The downside of still photography is that it only takes snapshots of moments in time even though events and stories in real life take much longer. Composing a shot with enough elements in it to tell a story is the true art of photography.

The only redeeming quality of this snapshot is simply that it conveys to the viewer that it is indeed a sweater. But due to the poor styling and flat lighting, the result is unappealing and commercially useless.

The size of the compact point and shoot market increased rapidly in the 1970s and 1980s, as new electronic technology allowed the layperson to take good quality snapshot images with little thought, using cameras that were relatively inexpensive.

Simply connecting a consumer digicam to your computer and printing out snapshots isn't a problem, but getting professional results from a digital SLR requires at least a reasonable familiarity with a PC or Mac.

For the average photographer, someone who needs the camera for everyday family snapshots and vacation photos, the best starting point is to decide what size camera is most comfortable.
