Soft-focus or diffusion filters give a misty quality to images and can impart a romantic mood to scenes and flower close-ups.

This was a 1940s soft-focus lens with a twist. Spherical aberration was deliberately left uncorrected at the sides. The softening is most obvious at full aperture. The lens becomes sharp as you stop it down.

The approach to achieveing a Soft-Focus effect is similar to the background blur effect above. Create a duplicate layer and blur it with Gaussian Blur. Mix it in with "Lighten" mode and an opacity around 50%.

The Cokin A830 is a diffusion filter you can use to create a soft-focus effect in your images. This effect is reminiscent of an era long gone, back in the early to mid twentieth century.

Now you have a beautiful, if dark, soft-focus image. So it's time to lighten it up. First, make a Curves Adjustment Layer. You can do so quickly by clicking the black-and-white circle at the bottom of the Layers palette, and choosing Curves.
