Soft Edged or Hard Edged?
As long as we're on the subject of graduated neutral density filters, another question that comes up often is whether to use soft-edged or hard-edged grads.

Soft Focus
You can always do a Soft Focus effect in Photoshop, but if you want to retain the CCD noise (digital grain) as part of the image, using a Soft Focus filter will let you do that.

Soft Lighting - low contrast lighting
Underexposure - when not enough light reaches the sensor making the picture too dark
Vignetting - underexposure at the edges of a picture ...

Soft Proof - This option enables you to preview on screen what the actual printed photograph will look like, and what the colors are going to be like.

SOFT FOCUS - A soft look achieved by bending some of the light from the subject so it is defocused while the rest remains in focus. Highlights are actually dispersed onto adjacent areas.

Soft Sun/White: These colours subtly warm up skin tone and are used in wedding and portrait work because the soft sun does not add false colour.

By using soft north light, Paul is avoiding any harsh directional lighting that could cause hard shadows. The low contrast of the scene delivers a dreamy feeling.

CRTs are soft, fuzzy and dim, which makes it difficult to work on photographic images and have a clue of what your images really look like. LCDs, on the other hand, have a degree of sharpness that's a great improvement, yet still lack in resolution.

What you need is a soft but fairly rigid support, about 15mm wide by a few inches long and 1-2mm thick.. This could be a Popsicle stick, a modified plastic knife, a modified kitchen spatula (I've seen all three suggested).
