SOFT LIGHTING - Low contrast illumination.
SOLARIZATION - Print solarization occurs when a photographic print is partially developed, then exposed to white light before the print is completely developed.

Soft Lighting Generally refers to a light source that has been diffused, filtered or weakened in intensity to make it less direct or harsh and more flattering to the subject.

Soft Lighting - Soft lighting can also be called diffused lighting. All this means is that the lighting used in the photograph (natural or artificial) is not harsh.

7) Use soft lighting. When you are photographing women use a softer type of lighting. Soft lighting from the back will help to illuminate the hair and provide a gentler overall image.

Soft lighting is the opposite. Soft light emanates from a large diffused source or is reflected from multiple sources, and is omnidirectional, scattering over a wide area.

Use soft lighting such as from a flash umbrella or a sunset. Make sure there is enough light to eliminate any shadows and produce a clear photo.

I like this, nice soft lighting and very sharp detail.

But ?

The difference between hard and soft lighting essentially comes down to the relative size of the light source compared to the subject. Soft lighting is light which originates from a large area.

Diffuse Lighting or Soft Lighting: Lighting that is low or moderate in contrast.
Existing Light: Any available light regardless of time of day and at any location.

A photographic umbrella is a kind of light modifier used to provide soft lighting. There are two kinds of umbrella: reflective and shoot-through. A reflective umbrella has a silver, white or gold surface on the inside.

Soft lighting has made the most of West Burton waterfall. A Canon EOS 5D was set to ISO 100 allowing an exposure of 1.3sec at f/22 with a 24-105mm zoom.

When I refer to window light, I am talking about the soft lighting that comes in through a window when it faces north or when the sky is overcast.

In this case, I wanted a nice soft lighting effect to illuminate the profile of these two special faces (and these two special people I am so fond of). Again.

Even with makeup and soft lighting, shiny highlights and uneven tones can show up in skin. I don't just look at the face, but the arms and legs as well.

In the best soft lighting conditions I can use slow shutter speeds between 1/8 and 1/60 of a second with the camera's mirror locked up. I focus the image and lock up the mirror.

It is much better to use some form of natural lighting. A north facing window on a cloudy day will yield very even soft lighting, while a piece of white cardboard can lighten the shadows or provide soft lighting by acting as a fill-in reflector.

There are many times that situations call for even, soft lighting to show all the details of a product. And it was pretty easy to achieve this with the fluorescent tubes.

Notice how the darker background has provided a very nice separation from our well-lit model. The combination of a large SoftBox for soft lighting and a Grid for directional light control has resulted in a very flattering portrait light.

The result is a very even, soft lighting of the subject.
Studio lights are reflectors with bulbs mounted on adjustable stands. Keep in mind that the color of the light you use to illuminate an object affects the colors in the final image.

Get out the camera on overcast days.
Instead of harsh, unflattering shadows and squinty eyes caused by bright sunlight, cloudy days mean soft lighting and photographs that can be especially pleasing.

source further from your subject, the quality of light becomes a little harder, or higher in contrast. Conversely, bringing a diffused light source like the medium LiteDome® in about 3-4 feet from the subject produces a beautifully soft lighting ...

Flash compensation: none
Flash 2: at right on SU-4
Exposure: 1/60 sec, f/4
Result: It simulates studio lighting at 45° from each side at front. IMO the most evenly distributed soft lighting of the whole test strips.

You can achieve this soft lighting by bouncing, or reflecting, the flash off a light-colored surface. By doing so, you are changing the narrow spot of light from a flash unit into a wide diffused area of light.
