The benefit is that you can swap the standard split screen for a different pattern to suit the type of photography you are doing.
With a lens attached, check for any specks on the split screen. It can sometimes be difficult to differentiate whether the specks are on the screen or on the lens, so checking with your own personal lens is best.

Sometimes two small prisms or a split screen is included in the central area of an SLR camera viewing screen. When the image is out of focus, it appears split in this area (fig. 4-9).
