Strobes
Strobes are large flashes. These lights flash quickly upon a signal from the camera (via a wire or remote). This means that high wattage bulbs can be used without heat issues.

Strobes are the real workhorses in a professional studio, and are basically larger and more powerful versions of your camera's built-in flash. They are cooler than continuous lights mainly because they fire very short bursts of light.

Strobe triggered via slave. There is often too much ambient light and too little strobe light emitted by these small cameras to trigger a slave through water.

Strobe
Unlike a monolight, a strobe requires a separate battery or power unit to supply the head with power. Strobe heads are smaller and lighter than monolight heads and can be used in the same fashion as monolights.

We have a little UK/US terminology problem here. In the UK a "strobe" is something which emits blinking pulses of light whereas in the US a "strobe" is any electronic flash unit, whether it fires once or continuously.

Strobe technique isn't necessarily that hard, but there are fair number of choices in equipment and approaches. For that reason, they will be covered in a separate article.

Pre-Flash - Some digicams use a low-power flash before the main flash to set the exposure and white balance. This does not allow the use of a normal photo slave strobe as it will be triggered by the pre-flash.
