Telephoto effect

Photography TelephotoTelephoto lens

Telephoto effect: In this portrait of my daughter, the background was a bit busy. I zoomed out to 150mm and used the longer focal length to isolate her from the background.

Telephoto effect. A change in perspective caused by using a long-focal-length lens very far from all parts of a scene. Objects appear closer together than they really are.
Telephoto lens. See Long-focal-length lens.

The telephoto effect can be applied to a lot of other situations where you want to create a flattening effect. One famous photographer used it to flatten a faraway crowd and make the people seem impersonal.

The regular zoom range (optical zoom) can be enhanced by the camera's built in software (digital zoom), for a stronger telephoto effect. Digital zoom can be effective, but when taken to extreme the image can take on a "pixilated" appearance.

Since the image is enlarged, it has a telephoto effect. A 100mm lens now has the same angle of view as a 160mm lens. Wider angle lenses are not as wide on a 1.6 size sensor, a 17mm lens looks like a 27mm lens.
