Take a test shot
Now you've set up your SLR, it's time to ensure you're using its LCD properly. By this we mean using the zoom buttons to zoom in on parts of the image on the rear screen, so you can check for sharpness or excessive noise.

A first test shot against a dark background shows that separation of the top cap and base will be hard to achieve. A lighter background is chosen.

Take a few test shots. If you're shooting digital, check the histogram in your camera's preview mode to make sure the exposure is good. If there's a lot of snow, the curve should go higher near the left edge of the histogram.

This is easy. Make test shots at different exposures and keep notes. The correct filter factor is the factor which, added to the exposure when shooting through that filter, gives the same exposure as with no filter.

From the test shots on land we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted. Once in the water I shot a whole card’s worth of images and Tao spent 30 minutes in the water. Then we reviewed the photos to work out what was working.

I used a tripod for all test shots. I shot the same subjects wide open with all three lenses as well as stopping down to f-11 and everything in between. I didn't go any slower than f-11 since telephoto lenses are rarely used at small f-stops.

Set your camera to Automatic mode, and fire off a test shot of whatever you want to photograph.
Open the image you just took in your camera's LCD screen and choose the menu to show you the EXIF information.

If you are using a camera with different selectable meter modes it would be a good idea to shoot some test shots with your camera in all of it's metering modes. Some cameras don't meter consistently between spot, averaging and center weighted.

Take your test shots underwater at the fixed distance dictated by your framing device and at the predetermined apertures, holding the flashgun to the one side and slightly above and pointing at the centre of the test subject.

You take a test shot and notice the blinkies are flashing so you dial in some minus compensation. The needed amount to get the histogram to look right winds up to be minus a full stop. Your shoot lasts for just about an hour.

Fog limit is the one that can be determined by giving few test shots.

Therefore it is crucial that you take a couple of test shots first, then zoom in (either in the camera or on the PC screen) to get a close-up look at exactly how the shot will look.

Test shots were run during times when the sun temporarily broke through the clouds in order to determine if multiple exposures would be required to capture the entire dynamic range of the scene.

What should you look for in the test shots? Look at any area with deep shadow, and if you see specks of red, blue and green color you are seeing "chrominance noise.

I take a "test shot" and check the histogram, using it to then adjust the exposure as needed and shoot again.

Always take a series of test shots to find out which settings, angles and compositions work best. Check the LCD screen repeatedly.

Next, set your aperture (increase your f-stop number) and take test shots and see how they turn out. This is where the trial and error comes in. I usually set my f-stop around 10 or higher, when I do have it set.

Often when I get to a new location, especially indoors, I will shoot several test shots just to see which white balance setting I prefer for that location.

The best thing to do is to take a test shot and adjust the camera exposure settings manually. Then use the same settings for all your shots.

you can easily use the mount with the Flashbenders in snoot configuration for even more light options. I don't notice a lot of light loss with the Rogue Grid either, which makes it easy to predict the outcome of a photo without a lot of test shots.

Predicting the final look can be tricky so professional photographers often install Polaroid instant film backs onto their cameras so they can do some test shots with instant film before loading up the camera with regular film.
