A mechanical or electronic feature that delays the camera shutter from firing so the user can step into the picture.
Two cool features every point and shooter should know about are the self timer and the exposure compen sation setting. The self timer is most frequently used when the photographer needs to be included in the picture.

Another feature that you want your digital camera to have is a self-timer or, ideally, a remote controller. The purpose is to allow you to depress the shutter release button without introducing camera shake.

This feature enables the user to set the camera to take a delayed picture. The self-timer mode enables the user to have enough time to get in the picture.
Self-Timer: A self-timer lets you set your digital camera for a delayed exposure, usually giving you about 10 seconds before it takes the picture.

Now that you have your UltraPod in hand, you can explore another under-used feature found on almost every digital camera: the self timer.

A timer or remote control is also great in low-light situations. You can rest the camera on a table or use a tripod and then trigger the shutter without touching the camera. This eliminates the camera shake that causes soft or blurred images.

Use the timer. While the camera is attached to the tripod, it is advisable to use the timer to eliminate camera shake, which usually happens while pressing the shutter release button.
Using the self timer instead of a cable release is a nice way to get a low light photo taken without touching the camera.

Being a crusty old-timer, I would say that if you want to learn how to take pictures, set the exposure controls to manual and learn how to work with shutter speed and aperture to get the effects you want.
