Tone separation - process of reducing the tonal range of a photograph to a very restricted range. The final result has strong highlights and deep shadows with a set number of intermediate tones. Also refereed to as Posterization.
Tone separation masks are used in non- technical photography to make color posterizations.75,79 Posterization is the technique of separating the tonal gradations of a photograph into clearly defined steps.
The first is "Tri-X Pan": ISO 400, available in 35mm and 120, much mid-tone separation and not much highlight separation.
In an effort to preserve midtone separation after extreme dynamic range compression, edge contrast is accentuated. This produces dark lines and bright halos, typically feathered rather than hard-edged.
