Tone values - various shades of gray between the extremes of black & white in a photographic image.
Toning - method of soaking the print in selenium or similar chemical(s) to help give the print an overall feeling of "richness".

The KODAK Gray Scale lets you see if you are capturing all of the possible tone values and making full use of the camera's dynamic range. The scale has 20 steps in 0.10 density increments between 0.0 white and a practical printing black of 1.

The horizontal axis represents the original tone values (input values), with black on the left and progressively lighter values toward the right.

Continuous tone ( CT ) device
A device that renders images by using tone values of different densities without applying halftone dots.

As we mention in the dynamic range page of our review, two of these photo styles, 'natural' and 'portrait' alter scene brightness, yielding brighter midtone values in addition to their color, contrast and saturation adjustments.

A system developed by Ansel Adams that considers subject brightness and negative exposure which, when combined with developing and printing gives you total control over the final prints tone values.

I simply felt that the artist could do distortion better than the photographer because he had this plasticity which could control the nuances. When he wanted to change something in the tone values, he could paint over it.

CONTINUOUS TONE-Photographs in which the detail and tone values of the subject are reproduced by an infinite gradation of gray densities between white and black.
