In addition to TTL flash, CLS is a complex system of master and remote wireless flashes. There can be up to a total of three groups (A, B and C) of wireless remote flashes that can be controlled independently with different exposure compensations.

 


TTL FLASH METERING
Most current SLR flash systems employ some form of through-the-lens (TTL) metering.

TTL Flash: Through the lens flash metering. Sensors located in either the prism, the mirror or on the film plane which record the amount of electronic flash coming into the camera at the time of exposure.

TTL Flash Metering For Macro Photography
TTL (through the lens) flash metering setups for macro work are very nice. However, you must be careful not to exceed the minimum flash to subject distance allowed for TTL mode with the flash unit.

I use the TTL flash system to let the flash control itself for perfect exposure as I vary distance.

Automatic versus TTL flashguns
Most serious photographers use their flashguns in manual mode, so that they have full control over lighting.

"Perfect" Fill Flash: TTL Flash with film wasn't perfect, but it had gotten pretty close. Digital flash has been quite a step back. That's because so far it's tried to recreate fill flash the way film did it.

With TTL flash, exposure is calculated automatically. You may need to make some adjustments, but with medium tone subjects, you should get correct exposure. Bounce heads let you control light to some degree.

Note: In preparing this web update, I talked to Ike Brigham of Ikelite about current trends in TTL flash. He comments "The Nikonos TTL strobes like SB-105 do operate TTL with the Coolpix 5000 camera in our housing. Same is true for our TTL SubStrobes.

It seems that Nikon has finally standardized on i-TTL flash system since neither body lists support for D-TTL among its features. Most users have probably already upgraded to the SB-800 or SB-600, so this not pose a problem.

You're probably shooting digital and can check exposure on your camera's LCD, so you don't really need TTL exposure control. If the second, non-TTL flash is too bright, manually dial down its power or add some distance between it and your subject.

I would advise that you go for a flash that has TTL flash metering (such as the excellent Olympus system) for macro, as it again removes all need for time consuming exposure calculations if you're using extension equipment.
