Tungsten-balanced films can be used with strobe units or during midday sunlight, but the color balance will shift decidedly toward the blue end of the spectrum. At twilight, the heavy blue shift is even more pronounced.
Until recently, in fact, tungsten-balanced film was only widely available as slide/transparency film (as two types - the rare tungsten A and the more common B, which have slightly different colour temperatures - 3400K and 3200K respectively).
Again, when shooting with film, outdoor shooting required a daylight film, and if you wanted to move indoors and shoot with tungsten lamps, you either had to filter the lens or switch to a tungsten-balanced film.
